John Skene and Son report under date December 6 as follows : — There is a veiy heavy demand for good shearers, owing, no doubt, to the nortliftrn sheds being late at "cutting out" ; there shotild, however, be plenty of shearers available soon. Smart shed hands are plentiful, and we are placing them daily. There has been a good rush for cooks and cooks and bakers. Ploughmen and agricultural workers are in good demand, and there is an extra heavy call for milkers. Taken all round, this market is in splendid tone. Wages rule as follows: — Shearers (current rates), 15s per 100; woolrortlers and piece pickers, 255; boys (fleece pickers), 17s 6d, 20s; pressers. Is, Is 3d per tale ; others, 303 per week ; shearers' cooks, 40s; cooks and bakers, 50s to 60s; ploughmen, 22s 6d, 255; txirnip thinners, 10s, 12s 6d per acre; milkers, 15s to 20s; station and farm coxiples, £75 to £60.
