TALK OF THE DAY.

THE D.J.C. STTMMER JVIEETING.

The nominations received for the Dunedin Jockey" 'Club's " summer meeting must be deemed satisfactory both from a numerical and qualitative point, of viewy considering the monetary value of the prizes and the amount of opposition which is in the field at that time of the year. The "West Coastand the North" Island hang up attractive programmes during the Christmas season, and many horses which in ordinary course would be found at Wingatui go farther afield, and probably lose the substance through grasping th\* shadow — that is to say. in trying and failing to win tho mare valuable races they hav-a passed over the snmll but possibly suiie stakes nearer home. Outside owners, however, are fairly well represented in the nominations just received, and a much better state of things cannot be looked for until the ranks of our local owners are strengthened. A fairly good class of horses have been nominated for the principal events, and the minor events have filled. a (great deal better tha.n usual. A strong feature of the nominations is the manner in whioh the two-year-old events have filled. The juvenile events on the D.J.C programme ar© usually contested by small fields, and it is to bo hoped a. fair percentage of the nominations in those races will be found under silk at the meeting. The total nominations show an increase of 29 over the number received last year, and the handicaps are duo to appear on December 12.
