MAGAR A.
' November 28. — On the 19th inst. a meeting of the settlers was held in the schoolroom here to discuss the best ways amd means of getting telephonic communication extended to this district. Before proceeding to this matter, however, Mr Coster, the secretary of the 1.0ca.1 branch of the Railway League, informed thosa present of the steps whioh had been taken in. regard to the extension of the Seaward xsuab railway. It appears that these had resulted in the despatch to the Minister of a stronglyworcied resolution condemning the apathy anc{ insincerity or tlie Government in this matter. Telephonic. — The question of the telephone was then brought forward by the convener and chairman of the meeting, Mr Robson. As all present were agreed upon the urgent need ot this convenience, a motion was quickly framed I and passed to the effect that -the Postmaster- ' general be made acquainted with the growth of the population and industries of this district, and that he be solicited to extend as sooa as possible the telephonic communication from Fortrose to Waakawa, with stations at Otafa, Tokonui, Quarry Hills, Waikawa Valley, and Niagara. A strong committee was also formed to take such further measures as they may; ! deem desirable to a.ttain the desired object. Concert and Ball. — On the 2nd prox. a concert and ball will be held in the school to raise funds tor prizes for the school children. As the matter is in the capable hands of Mr Shirley, and as the district is busy and prosperous , at present, the affair is pretty certain to be a success, and to afford great pleasure and enjoy j ment to ail who may take part in it.
