JPENINSULA.

August 2.— The Peninsula Contingent Otago j Hussars held its annual concert and bait j iv the Sandymount Hall. Th- weather was »erfeot, and as a result a bumper hoiise gladdened the hearts of the managers. Mr James Garr, an ex-member of the troop, on taking the chair, apologised for the absence ©f the officers of the. company, who would have fljeen present but for a prior and more lmt,ortent engagement. The programme was opened by a pianoforte duet by the Misses CSTyhon. Corporal Dickson gave a good render~ang of "Anchored," and, in response to an •encore, sang " Give me the bloom of my own aiative heath." Mr Dickson possesses a good •Itenor- voice, and has already established him«elf a. favourite. Miss Lochead sang "' Rothesay Bay " viry pleasingly Miss Hail s tendering of " The mansion of hearts " pleased jthe audience, and, on. "being recalled, sang "'When, the heart is young." Mr D. Robertson, who has already made a name for himself on the concert platform, sang " The flight pt ages," and, as an encore number, gave " The -Standard on the braes o' Mar." Mr Trevena, conjurer©, here took the stage, and for half an hour succeeded in bewildering and ■nystifying his audience. His several feats • jwere clever, and were neatly and smartly done. Mis " turn " was a most attractive one, and he jmay-rest assured of a hearty welcome should jfae appear in future. He fully deserved the special vote of thanks moved by the chairman, Jand heartily accorded by the audience. Miss Hall opened the second part of the programme j with the old favourite " Killarney," and, on being recalled, repeated the number. My Robertson thenjjave another old favourite in •*• The King's Own," for which he received an encore, and gave "My Heather hills." Miss tochead followed with the " Island of dreams," «nd Corporal Dickson brought the concert to W>. close by giving " The march of the Cameron bnen," for which he received an imperative ja-eealL Mention must be made of two recitations by Mr Raynbird, which were well received, and a couple of step dances by Mr IKedley Fairbairn, who gave a sword dance and '^Highland fling in good style. The accornrpanists during the evening were the Misses JNyhbn, Dickson, and Corbett for the singers, ' «iid Mr F. Fairbairn supplied the pipe music, teearty votes of thanks were accorded to all the ladies and gentlemen who had contributed to the evening s pleasure. Dancing then conitnenecd to the enlivening strains of music Supplied by Messrs Clark brothers, and feas - kept * going till well on in the rnorning. -Everything went "as merry hs a marriage bell " under the able "control of M.C.'s Rutherford and M'Tainsh. fcfr M. Anderson (Portobello) was the caterer, and his arrangements met with general approbation. , Road Board Presentation r.t Portobello.— On "Saturday evening, 30th ult., a number of ratepayers and friends in the Portobello Road -district met Mr W. Dickson, of the Road !Board, and presented him with a gold watch ■chain and pendant^siuitably inscribed, as a memento . of his long service — 30 years — as a. member and as chairman of the board. Mr 'Js&~. Maoandrew, who made the presentation «n behalf of the subscribers, referred in com- ~- j)limentaiy terms to Mt Dickson's services to the district, and conveyed to him an assurvn.ee that his labours were fully recognised «nd appreciated by his fellow settlers.. Mr Dickson, in the course of a few brief sentences, ■warmly thanked his friends for their handsome present — a present which was unexpected •md undeserved, as during the time he had "fceen a member of the board he had merely .clone his duty. At the conclusion of the formal proceedings refreshments were served. and the health of Mr Dickson was toasted in Immpers.— On- Tuesday evening, 2nd inst., a number of neighbours and friends assembled at Mr Robert Cieaiwater's residence as a •''surprise party," and presented Mrs Clear■jwater with a salver tea- and coffee service, ■prior to her departure for Gore, where Mr. Clearweter has taken up a. farm. Mrs Olearvater is a native of the distract, and the presentation represented a souvenir of the goodwill ef her neighbours both at Portobello and Hooper's Inlet. After the presentation Bpleasant, evening was spent in dancing and -•conversation. . Portobello Road Board.— The monthly meeting, held on Saturday, was attended by all foe members. The inspector's report was adopted, and 150 yards of metal was granted tat Mr R. Clearwater's road. The inspector was instructed to report on the cost of two chains of formation and new culvert in Oban township. It was icsolved that a rate of Jd in the pound be levied on, all rateable property in the road! district, payable in one sum im the Ist August. The Rang&r- reported that he had impounded horses and cattle during the month, and in several cases he was paid on demand before taking them to the pound, and he had warned others. Mrs M'Quilkan's {Dunoon) application for two loads of metal for a footpath was granted. Mr J. A. Riddell lorwardisd a petition signed by four ratepayers praying that the fence be removed and the ditch filled in from the Maori Reserve to Mrs Garrick's gate; — to stand over tdll next meeting. Messrs J. Granger and Leithley were •appointed surfacemen to the board. Mr A. B. Johnson's name was inadvertently used in last report in connection with motors and - bicycles for that of Mr A. Johnston.
