The Duke and the Labourer.
The following story is told about the Duke of Devonshire (says the "Club Chatterer," in To-day). His steward had iuforroetl him that there was not half enough work on one of the home farms at Chatsworth to keep the hands busy, and advised the dismissing- of several Tbo Duke as- | sented, and a day or twt afterwards was I accosted by one of tho discaaded labourers, j an Irishman. "Well, Pat," said his Grace, "I'm sorry you've had to go, but at. present there's , not sufficient work to employ you all." i Pat scratched his head awhile, and then ! looked up at the Duke with a twinkle in 1 his eye. "Is that it, your Grace?" said he. "Sure if it's only a question of work you needn't send me away at all, for, be~ dad ! very little of it will keep me going.'' This honest admission appealed to the Duke, and Pat was found another job a day or two afterwards.
