The Duke and the Labourer.

His steward had iuforroetl him that there was not half enough work on one of the home farms at Chatsworth to keep the hands busy, and advised the dismissing- of several Tbo Duke as- | sented, and a day or twt afterwards was I accosted by one of tho discaaded labourers, j an Irishman. "Well, Pat," said his Grace, "I'm sorry you've had to go, but at. present there's , not sufficient work to employ you all." i Pat scratched his head awhile, and then ! looked up at the Duke with a twinkle in 1 his eye. "Is that it, your Grace?" said he. "Sure if it's only a question of work you needn't send me away at all, for, be~ dad ! very little of it will keep me going.'' This honest admission appealed to the Duke, and Pat was found another job a day or two afterwards.
