Mr A. F. Walter, proprietor of the London Times, wrote to a correspondent concerning that daily under date of June 10 : — " The control of The Times has been in my hands for a good many years past, it is there now, and there it will remain tmtil events over which mortals have no control shall place it in the hands of my successor. Until that happens, you may rest assured that no outside influence of any kind or of any origin will ever be permitted to affect the character of the great institution, which was founded by my greatgrandfather 120 years ago, which has never for a moment passed from under the control of his lineal successors, and which I, in my turn, have*the honour and responsibility of conducting to-day."
