RACING IN AUSTRALIA
V.A.T.C. GRAND NATIONAL. MELBOURNE, August 6. The weather was dull for Ihe V.A.T.C. raeeting. The following are the results: — GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES. Good Day, 9.0 ("Williamson) 1 Kipling, 10.4 (Cosgrove) 1 Equity, s) 2 (.Hughc-3) 3 Fifteen horses started. Betting : 4 to 1 agsfc E'deibiie. 5 to 1 Bellis, 8 to 1 Larasati, 10 to 1 Kipling, 12 to 1 My Mistake, 50 to 1 Good Day. The field spreacf out from the start, Kipling being last a.vay. At the back Zircon took charge from Kudos and R-awdon. At the railway side the firfat time round Zircon and Kudos were together, five lengths ahead of Mooi field, Pierrot, Rawdon, and Enchanted: States, with Good Day last. Kudos was in front on entering the straight, and passed the stand a couple of lengths ahead of Zircon. Ccmiijg to the railway side the second time Equity ran tip to Zircon, and a length away came Kipling. Bellis and Airly fell at the obstacle in front of the stand. Zircon, Equii3 r , and Kipling were in the van on rounding the turn, with Good Day moving up very fast. The latter swept into the straight, and hopped, the last fence in advance of the field. Kipiing, whi> was the nearest .vttendant, immediately challenged, and the pair fought out a desperate finish, Good Day lasting long enough to gain the judge's verdict by a Deck; Equity, two lengths away, third. Quo Nadis was fourth. Time, Gniin 482 sec, being Bsec better than the previous record.
