UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the T T niversity Council, held on 4-th inst., was attended by the Vice-chancoilor (Mr James Allen, M.H.TL. who presided), Dr Stand, Professor Sa'e, Mr D. Stewart,, and the Revs. W. HewMson and A. Cameron.
The Finance Committee reported that the credit bakinee. on July 1 was £463 Is 3d, and recommended that the Minister of Education bo written to asking that provision be made for the payment of travelling expanses of members coming from country districts to attend meetings. — The report was adopteo.
The Council's Solicitors forwarded ad\ - ice that Mr \\ r hite In accepting the office of lectmer at the hands of the University Council had, ipso facto, ceased to be a member of the council. — Mr White also wrote forwarding his resignation as a member of the council — On the motion of iho Rev. A. Cameron it v>ns unanimously rpsolvec 1 — " That the council in acceptingthe resignation of Mr D. R. While as a member of the council on his appointment ab lecturer on education desires to record its recognition of t.he gre.\t value of the services of Mr White during th-e 12 j-oars he has occupied a seat at the council table."
The Chi-rf Surveyoi. Dunedin, wrote asking the council ro give tho necessary authority to the Survey Department to erect a fi\e-cham standard in the University ground, with permission to ha\e the control of and access to it. — Granted during the council's plea'ur^.
SI'EC'IALISATICV.
The Registrar of Victoria College, "Wellington, forwarded the following- resolution pa.s=ed by tho council of that college: — " That, considering the small funds available for university educa f on in New Zealand and the comparatively small number of students, this council is of opinion that there should bo specialisation of university work by the colleges, and would urge the Auckland College Council to invite represenlatnes of the various colleges to meet and say whether xmy agreement could be aimed at as to such specialisation."' Dv Shand remarked that the communication appeared to require no answer, and it was simply received.
SCHOOL OF MIKES
Tntimation was received horn the Mines Department, Y\'e hnglon, that a voucher had been pass-. 1 , for the. extra grant of £250 to the Miniug Jvl-co!. and that the Minister of Minos haci. Lowevor, directed that the council be informed that no extra subsidy could be authoiised in the future.
The council deferred consideration of the letter, going into committee to receive a verbal report of the last interview of a deputation of the council with Sir Joseph Ward in respect to the Otago Medical School.
On resumption in open council it was resolved that the Premier be asked if he could meet a deputation of the council on July 16 or July 18 re the Medical Schoo', the deputation to consist of the chancellor, vice-chancellor. Professor, Shand and Silo, and Messrs Stewart and T. K. Sidey, AI.H.R. It ua<= aKo resohed that the same deputation should wait on the Minister of Mine, if l.iccssary, asking him to cont.nue the extra grant to the School of M'nes.
