CHESS MATCH. CHRISTCHURCH v TIMARU.
A chess match, by telegraph, -v%as commenced on Satuiday evening between teams representing the Canterbuiy and Timaiu Chess C!ub3, 12 a-side. The Timaru uinpiis v.as Mr Martin, while Mr Coales acted iv the same capacity at Timaru for th& Canterbury Club. The telegiaph arrangements were carefully attended to by Mr H. I. Bennett. The Timaru Club attacked at the odd-numbered board.*, and play proceeded more or less briskly during the evening. The following are the players engaged, the Christchurch men's names coming first in each, instance : — ■

Turrell v. Walton, Irregular.
At Board No. 1 Mr King has a pawn to tho good, but there are prospects for either side. Mr Hardcastle, at Board No. 3. has won a. look for a knight. At Beard No. 7 Mr Worsley has also won the exchange, a rook tor a bishop. Mr Cooper, at Board No. 3, still retains the gambit's pawn, and Mr Woodford, Board Xo. 10, lias secured an advantage by winning a pawn. The Timaru players do not appear to have gained any advantage, as the games other than those mentioned are about ever.. The matck will be continued on Saturday evening.
