THE MEMORIAL DESIGNS.
Mr Salmoiul, speaking on behalf of the siib-cominittee appointed to judge th& compotitivo memorial designs, .-aid thai- in rospon=e to the circular issued some 26 designs of varying degrees of excellence had be on sent in. The committee hud met once or twice, and after thorough consideration had selected what they hrld to he the first a id second designs in point of merit, an. l those dos'gns would now ho «uhmi.led to ti"» jn&etmg for approval. Ai> an act of
courtesj tho members of the City Council had been incited individually to inspect tho designs, and had approved of the oammittee's selection individaally, but ihs designs had still to h& approved by the. council as a wholo. It was for the meeting, then, to approve of the committee's choice and decide that the designs be- forwarded to the City Council for final decision. The winning design showed a column 36ft high, surmounted by a trooper. The upper part, from ihe font, was to be carried out in white ma rifle, and the lower part in dark i stone. The committee considered the baso of tho design might be improved by a slight modification or alteration. On the motion of Mr Cray, seconded by Mr Burlin=on, it was resolved that the subcommittee's l-eport should be received, and tho prizes for the two best designs awarded in accordance with their recommendation. The names of the winning designers were then disclosed, the design bearing the titls "Amor di Patria," submitted by Messrs Beigamini and Read, being that placed fir?.t ; that placed second bearing the title " Forfcium Honoie,"' and being sent in by Mr Graham Miller, of Maclaggan street. It was also resolved that all tho designs should be, if possible*, laid open for public inspection at the Town Hall. ~ SC'HOOf. SOUVENIRS. Mr Brittain found fault with the expense the eub-committ© was goin:^ ro wh'ch had been appointed to deal with tl matter of school .souvenirs. If the inenicn:>l was to cost £1000, it would mum that they would have barely £400 left with which to supply 400 schools. That meatit they might find themselves in the position of having to again appeal to the public Mr Burlinson moved — "That tho subcommittee re school-tablet design « be a«ked ro report to the committee, and that a meeting of the General Committee be called for r.L an early date to consider the subject." Mr Park considered that reflections wei'e I being east on the sub-oommittee. Mr Burlinson had complained of the- delay in the committee's operations as to the school?, but there had been just as much delay in respect to the monument. As far as he was aware, there were not 400 schools to be provided — only 300 or 350. It was a very difficult matter to pleaso everybody, and the committee had gone to great trouble. Comment should be deferred till its report was leoeived, and then perhaps the delay and the cause of it would be explained. The motion was carried, and the meeting then terminated.
