WELLINGTON NOTES.

I BY ONiOOKEB.

i May 7. The Marlborcugb Racing Club risked the weather by holding its autumn meeting somewhat later in the season than usual. Wednesda3 r last turned out, besuiifi'lly fine, and there was a good attendance at the Riveriands racecourse. Although the meeting attracted j over 20 horses from across the strait they were not the class to bring foreign capital. At the end of the day the totalisator turnover was only £16S ahead of last autumn. The hurdlers were &, poor lot, and the Wairarapa-owued Ambrosia scored somewhat easily at the finish from Te Ngaio, '»vho comes from Foxton. Dr Bill might ha*-e beer, second had his rider persevered. Tlie Handsome Jack —Spring Rose ri.'ly, Rose Petal, who disappointed licr con- ! i ections at the Hutt, put down a good favourit>e in Rungaraua m the Maiden. The winner is owned by an official of the club, irb adopts the norn de course of H. Lawson. Montague was third, but it was not his day out. Ngarara bolted off the course and landed his jockey among some vehicles. Catrill hit a post -coming round the bend, and lost his jockey. The Cup proved a good thing for Sandy, who waa made favourite and paid £2 6s, a good price. There was not much between Oudenarde and Hydrant for second. Sandy is owned by Mr R. Solomon, whose bi other raced Muscovite. Sandy has somewhat improved in manners and form sincetrained in tile Taranaki district. Bert Hewitt made his first appearance on the course on Re-nga in Ihe Opawa Welter Handicap. He was the subject of much gapesecd in tht> paddock, and his moxtnt was sent out favourite. He hopped off in front, and came in by himself. -The win was a very popular one, aa Ronga is owned by Miss Bertha Clifford (daughter of Air Walter Clifford). The young lady trains the horse and rides it in exercise on a private track on her father's station. Although the Vv'inner was first favourite it paid the fair price of £3 Us. Mr Chevannes broke the jockeys m this raca up. He held Seascape at the start, and because the other 10 riders let their mounts get ahead of the startler's he fined them £5 each. De Wet made a better show than m the 'Maiden, and finished fourth. Jeanne d'Albert struggled on to the end, and just beat Seaweed, who' was paying £30 to win, for second ( place. | There was very little merit in Narcotic's win 1 in the Flying, b°cause aome of the others were not very anxious. White Ribbon was brought out again and backed, but shaped no bettev/ than m the Cup. Greensleeves was allowed to get a bieak of several lengths -n the first < half, but tired to notEing, and did not have a j fmis-h left when Narcotic came on the scene. ( Perilla put up 15lb overweight, and after mat- i ing the running to the turn came in last. The start for the Electric Hack Race, a fivefurlong flutter, was of the straggling order. Rose Petal put up 10lb penalty and 4ib overweight, and after getting left on the mark cam-e i fourth. Delight also got badly away, and cam-e second, being unable to reach Sedgemere, who vas in front all the way. For the concluding day the weather was again favourable. The sum of £3178 was passed throitgh the totalisator, making £6594 for the meeting This is £151 more than last 1 autumn. In four out of five races horses ran ' off tbe course through it not being fenced in/ < The Forton-owned Te Ngaio paid the surprising dividend of £8 2s in the Hurdles, after acting as runner-up the previous day. Alf. Rose stored his 1 only victory at the meeting in the High-weight Hack Handicap with Mooi, who put down a better favourite in Perilla. Sandy had no difficulty in repeating his first day's performance. He won comfortably at the finish, although less than a length separated each of the placed horses. Rose Petal and Rungarawa got left in the Dash Hack Handicap, the 'latter acting as runner-up to Sedgemere, who was not fancied, and paid £7 3s. Rose Petal came out again m the Telegraph Handicap, and paid! £5 17s. Had Narcotic Lot run off he must have won. Rungararawa also had a winning turn in the Welter Hack. Sedgemere, who dead-heated with the Mauser colt Greenstone for second place, was paying £7 10s for first. Sandy has incurred 7lb penalty in flic Hawke" Bay Cutd, which increases his weight to 7.11._ ' i A private wira was received in Blenheim oil I Thursday last to the effect that Trendmill was amiss and would not compete at Hawke's Bay. L. H. Hewitt arrived from Blenheim on Friday, and left the same day for ChristchureJi. He rode at the Christchurch Racing Club's meeting on Saturday, left for Wellington the same right and journeyed on ti Napier on Monday morning. Murmur met his death in a sh'gii'ar manner on the morning of the second day of the Marlborough Racing Club's nioe-t-mg. He was roiJ' ing m a paddock, and got on his back in a narrow chtch. In tiymg- to get out he broke cjxe of his hind legs and was destroyed. The e:c-hacl:s Toiiurangi and Manaviaru are Ladly handicapped .n the Connoiiy Handicap at Wangamu. The fonder is placed, at tie 'jmo mark as Sanclv, and ihe Hutt-trameo. horse is as n <ed to give weight to Plaidi", Shrappel Shell, nncl other penormers. Manav.-aru was scratched as soon as the weights- oppea:cd Replete was taken ac vos's to the Blenii^iu' meeting, and accepted both days bub did not &at, t'lip mare having a touch of influenza. Mr Wi Hutfina, trainei oc ltungai.a\w ard He plete, is not vi good health at picssnt. Kremlin has joined F. Tille>'sj stable at Foidell. The Siepmak gelding v/as purchased

by Mr Dngald Thompson aftex the ila.:i;vsvatti Hiec-ting ior £400. During the two d.jy.? of the Mn.'.Vcroiig'Js" meeting six horses ran off the course. Jlad one of these kept, on the track Le would Lives won and saved the bookmakers a iot cf money. Ailsa and Solution weie sent iron?, tl.e if at* to Hastings during the waek. Mitdawan: vi-Jl l'.ot make the trip. _ George Hope has arrived at ihe H>;ii from I Greymouth with a two-vpar-old bay geld:rg by ' Quilt— Maude, lull biother to Rehua. I Torbrina (Torpedo — Sabnna) Las been thrown out of framing, and will take i«i> stud dr>ty in tihe Otaki district. On Thursday last, at llleiibsivp. Ton-. Shannon, the well-known Spring Creek breeder, submitted a two-rear-old filly, by MeirJc Ei)g]az>£ — Prologue, to auction. The youugbter is well grown, but failed to reach the owner's reserve. Prologue is a datighter of Rosalind. Rosa Petal, who wen two events at the Riverlanda course last week is the first progeny of Spring Rose 'Medallion— Rosalind). The two filiies purchased by Mr R. W. Patterson at the Palmerston North sales aro being broken in. The Medallion filly (bred in New South Wales) shows more quality than, the Torpedo colt, who is a half-brother to Gold Ciown, Eags, and other performers!. I On the recommendation of the starter (Mr C. Chevannes)' the fines inflicted in the Opawa Welter Handicap at the Marlborough nioctiug, amounting to £50, were remitted at the conclusion of the meeting. The two voungsts-rs that arrived from Duneclin recently are being broken in and ridden round the roads at tne Hutt. They are a brown colt by Lord Rosslyn— Escopeta (Hotchkiss — Agnes), named Armamento, and a bayfilly by the same sire from Komuri (sister to Euroclydon), named Vcntalera. They are owned by the Hon. George M'Lean and trained by W. Davis. Kohunui v.-as schooled over the steeplechasecountry at the Hutt, and shaped in a satisfactory manner. The Yoltigeur gelding will probably fulfil his Wanganui engagements. It was intended to race Sandy in the Hawke's Bay Cup had the Soult gelding not incurred a penalty through winning at Marlborough. The 71b extra weight made Sandy meet Canme Chiel on the same terms as when he ran third to the Clanranald horse at the Manawatu meeting. Le Beau has not incurred a penalty in the Hack Handicap at Hastings for winning at Hawera. Le Beau is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Leolantis — Belle, and ran fourth in the Plying Hack Handicap on the second day of the Manawatu meeting, won by Lady Bobs. Parkshot, who beat Le Beau over six furlongs at Egmont, has also esca.ped a penalty at Hastings. Benefactor and Warwick were schooled over Lurdles at the Huttone morning last week. C.
