THE LATE MR ARTHUR SMITH.
The death is announced of Mr Arthur Smith, who, for clo-© on lialf a century has been a well-known and highly-respeted figure in racing circle*. Mr Smith died on Saturday evening at the age of 70 year-, after being takon ill last .sreek with hemorrhage of the brain. He was born at Oxford, -nheie his father kept a livery stable, and came out to Victoria, y\lien 16 years of age. He tried gold digging, and was ajso for some time engaged in driving a mail coach. Eventually he settled down in Goeloug, but afterwards :ame to Dimcdin m ith a trial shipment of horccs in the s.s. Omeo about IC6I, and did so well that further shipments followed. Mr Smith eventually decided to settle in Dunedin with his wife and family, and ke.pt livery stables in Maclaggan street for a number of years, but afterwards removed to South Dunedin. He took a keen interest in sporting matters, and was one of 'the founders of the Otago Jockey Club, and later on the Duuedin Jockey Club, on which body he acted aa one of a triumvorate of handicappcrs. He had generally two or three horses in training, and was also a strong supporter of the. Hunt Club. Mr Smith took an active part in the formation of the recently-established Forßury Park Jockpy Chib, and was one of the stewards oi the club at the time of his death. ,
