TAPANUI HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The above society had splendid weather for its annual show on Saturday, 6th, and' as a consequence there was a good turn-out of exhibits and people. The entries in all classes oixoeeded those of any past year, and the judge« pronounced the quality exceedingly good all through. The new Town Hall afforded ample space to make a good display, but th« lighting in tho evening was not as good as it might have be-en. The honours worewoll divided amongst exhibitors, and competition was keen in somo classes. Mr Burrows (Gore) judged the flowers, fruit, and vegetables ; and Mrs Dunnet (Kelso) th-e jams v jellies, and dairy produce, and both appeared to give every eatibfaction. In the evening the building was well filled with peoplo, who wero e-nter-tain-ed by Bundle's orchestra with an excellent programme of music. Refreshment room, guessing competition, etc.. were in evidence,, and the show was generally voted the most successful yet held here. Mr Ferguson made a competent secretary, and the committee worked well together.

Only 20 schools out of the 170 in the North Canterbury education district sent candidates to^ compete for the board's scholarships last year.
