THE ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

MELBOURNE, January 29. The visiting athletics were accorded a heaity reception. Smith, Laurie, and Ross are in splendid condition, but Simpson is in high fever, owing to vaccination. He is an improbable starter.

Lord Mayor M'Eachern to-day welcomed the members of the Australasian Association. A hearty reception was accorded the New Zealanders.

Ross stated that Smith, Laurie, and himself are in splendid condition. Unfortunately Simpson is in such a high fever, owing to his vaccination last Saturday, that he ia a most improbable starter.

The Lord Mayor, in welcoming the visiting athletic teams, spoke very strongly against betting in connection with amateur sports, and said that were such was permitted true sportsmen should show their disappiobation by not attending.
