DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB.
The monthly meeting of the D.J.C. Committee was held on Tuesday afternoon ; present—Hon. G. M'Lean (m the chair), Messrs Thomson, Taggart, Coughlan, Hazlett, Ewing Carr, Bullock, Miller, Ilttilon, Solomon, and Meyers. An apology wps received from Mr James Mills. T A letter was received from the \ mcent Jockey Club stating that Mr W. Thurlow had protested against Mr J. R. Smith's Equinox, winner of the Maiden Plate, on the ground that the horse was not registered before starting. The Protest Committee met and heard the case, during which Mr Smith admitted that his hoise was not registered until after the race had been run, and it was decided that the protest be dismissed. Mr W. Thurlow, owner of the second horse (Estel!a\ lodged an appeal against the Vincent Club's decision, and cfaimed the stokes under rule 143, sections v anr! vl, which provide that a horse is not qual.fied or permitted to start in any race unless ths fee for registration for such hoise has been paid —Resolved that the appeal be upheld. A letter was received from, the Palmerston Racing Club giving the result of the inquiry into the running of the Novel Race at their meeting on the Ist of January, and forwarding evidence taken, the result being that L. S. Lloyd (ndier of Flossie) was disqualified for two years for foul riding; that John O'Connell's (rider of Saladm) license was suspended for the season ; that E. M"Lea,n (rider of Patron 1 * was disqualified during pleasure, the term to be fixed at a. further meeting ; and that Mr Coghill was severely cautioned for not notifying the change of ownership of Saladm. — Resolved that the sentences already imposed bs endorsed', the Palmerston Club to be notified that the D.J.C. regard the punishment quite insufficient, and consider that they should again go into the matter and make the punishment reach the owners, and to refer them to rule 143, subsection 7, and ask wha,t fine they propose to inflict on John O'Connell for training without a license.
The transfer of the bay colt Uranus from H. Fnedlander to G. G. Stead was 1 passed.
An Application for a jockey's license was received from James Henry. — This applicant was refused a license in October last, and toldl to apply again in six months. Resolved to adhere to the former decision.
In connection with the Cup me-eting in Febluary, it was d-ecided that the firs!, race start at 12.30 and the last at 5.15 ; that the train arrangements as made with the Railway Department be approved; and that the inside totabsator be worked at £1 and the outside at 10s.
The question of licensing bookmakers was fully snd carefully considered l , and it was decided that the application to be licensed be no+ granted for the Cup meeting.
A letter was received, from the Town Clerk stating that his Worship the Mayor would declare the usual holiday on Cup day.
Resolved — " That all races in future be started from the platform of starting machines instead of from the ground." The Secretary reported that the racecourse had been let for picnics as under : — Caversham Sunday School, January 27 ; Early Settleis, February 4. — St. Paul's Sunday School wrote thanking the club for the use of the grounds for their annual picnic. Several new members were elected.
