CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held in the County Chambers, Balolutha, on Friday, when there were present — Mr "W. Hay (chairman), Crs J. Cumming, R. Grainger, J. Claike, D. A. M'Lachlan, A. C. Saundsrs, Walter Nicol, J. R. Mitchell, and Jaro-es Ayson.
Cr Grainger moved that the matter of the proposed bridge at Kelso ba further held over for a- month. — Agreed to. The petition from James Kirk and other Eouipapa settlers asking for a road through sections 22 and 30, block VIII, Catlins, before last meeting, and in regard to which the Land Board Bad decided they could not authorise Iho expenditure of " thirds," was considered. — Cr Saunders stated that the chairman he had visited the spot last Tuesday, and found that the request* was not an unreasonable one. (The road could be brought through the private property for £7. Mi Kirk was willing to give work to the extent of £14.— The Chairman endorsed, and said the request should be granted. The council would not be committing itself to further expenditure in the matter, only to the purchase of two acres of land for the outlet.— Cr Saunders moved that the request be gi anted. and that steps be taken to secure the land required from Mr Pollock. — Seconded by the chairman, and carried. The Department of Roads, Dunedin, wrote informing the council that the Minister of Public Works had decided that the work of renewing and repairing Balchitha traffic bridge •was stopped to give time to one of the local "bodies interested to pay its share of the expenses. — Received, Cr M'Lachlai' giving it a3 his opinion that the remissness of the Balolutha Borough Council should be inquired into.— The Chairman said it was all right now, us the necessary authority to raise a loan of £500 had been procured by the borough. W. D. R. M'Curdie, district load engineer, wrote forwarding statement of expenditure in repairing Balclutha traffic bridge up to December 31. The total amount was ±'1845, the Bhare of the loan bodies was £922 10s, and the balance due by the council was £27 10s 3d. — Received. A. C. Begg, Dunedm, wrote enclosing cheque for £60 Is 3d, in payment of rates due on his property near Clinton, and asking that the remaining unmetalled part of the Mam Sou.th road near Mr J. W. Thomson's place be this suirmer metalled. He did not think there was more than 20 or 25 chain?.— Cr M'Lachlan said application had been made to the Government for £100 for tho road, but it had been refused, and he was sorry, but the council had no funds for the work. — Letter received.
John Finlayson, Lochindoro, Puerua, wrots drawing attention to the urgent need o! repjiirs to the bridge on the Pucrua xoad between the Lochindorb gate and the forks of the Puertia. — Cr Nichol moved that the engineer attend to the culvert. No funds were available for the other road. — Mrtion carried.
John Dunn, Viewfield. Eomahapa, called attention to the state of the culverts at Hurrayrale on road Romahapa to Balclutha, and »tating that thej had only been fit to stand.
bght tiafnc for the last three years.— The Chairman moved that the engineer examine the culverts, snd report at next meeting; they should be made fit to carry a traction engine ; one | perhaps could be filled in. — Seconded by Cr i Kichoi, and carried. i Wiiliam Sutherland and four other ratepayers I of South Molyneux Riding requested the use of the coxmty grader find a man to form react from Mr Sutherland's house up the riverside, to raise bank to keep the river from overflowing its banks. The applicants agreed to supply j horses for the* work. — Request granted, on ths motion of the- chairman.
Cr Mitchell presented a petition from Thonias Chapman and five other ssfctlers at Pomahaka asking that the council do something to make the road to the ford passage at section 4, block XIV, Pomahaka Downs.— Ct Clark moved that tlie engineer hs authorised to carry otit the work at a cost not to- exceed £5. — Ivtr Chapman said he was willing to do tha work for that amount. — The Engineer said an airangement had been entered into with Mr Clements some six months ago, but nothing had been done.— Motion carried. The Clerk reported the following leceipts from December 18 to January 26, 1904.— Rates £788 18s, deposits £20 16s 6d, Government vote Waiwera bridge approaches £33 15s, Balclutha Borough £6 13s 2d, flax on roa dimes £5, rent Port Molyneux reserve £13, dog tax 2s 6d ; — total, £534 5s 2d. The Finance Committee's report recommended payment of accounts amounting to £1176 7s 6d, including laml fund £15 11s Sd, Ahuriri loan £85. — Accounts passed accordingly.
Cr Jrainger moved that tenders be called for ditching on Cleghorn's road. — Seconded by Cr Clarke, and carried. Tenders for works were opened and dealt wiTn as follow : —
Contract No. 47, M'lntyre's road, Glenkenieh, bridge and approaches: John Crawford, £75. — Cr Grainger said the engineer was of opinion that the work could be done for £50 by day labour. He moved that the engineer employ the necessary day labour. — Agreed to.
Kaihiku Station road, from railway crossing eastwards, 80 yards maintenance metal: Jps. Townley, £26 (accepted), Fmdlay M'Kay, £25 15s Bd.
Middle road, Kaihiku, and School road, opposite J. Johnston'.s, 45 yards maintenance metal: Jas. Townley £15 15s, Findlay M'Kay £15 15s and £1S 17s 6d ; metal to be delivered to surfacemen where required. — The latter tender was accepted. '
Upper Hunt's road, abcut 12 chains metalling: G-eo. Agnew £50, John Thomson £61 15s, J. A. Thomas £70 17s.— The Cleik seated that the lowest tenderer had not sent the necessary deposit, and it was decided to call for fresh tenders, to be opened in a fortnight.

Main road, frcm Paterson's store to Port Ztfolyneux reserve boundary, 400 yards maintenance metal : J. A. Thomas £140, Jas. Townley £130, Findlay M'Kay £139 Us Bd, or if carted on to road and laid down where required £149 11s 8d (accepted), John Thomson £136 13s 4d, Win. Snenca £136 13s 4d, R. S. M'Kenzie £138 Gs Bd.

Cleghorn's road, Glenkenieh, erection of fencing: John Crawford 4s per chain (accepted), Norman M'Cormick 4s 3d.
Tapp's road, Upper Hunt's, seven chain 3 metalling near Tapp's place: Robt. Sims £27 with rotten rock and £35 with hard rock.— Fresh tenders to be called.
