PROFESSOR BALDWIN SPENCER'S LECTURE

The Gairison Hall on Thursday night was filled in every part whp.i Profc.-sor Baldwin Spencer, F.R.S., professor of biology in the Melbourne Univeisity delivered a. lecture on "The Central Australian Aborigines Their Habits and Cm<tom3." Professor Da\id. President of tho Association, occupied the chair. The lecture was illustrated by over a hundred lime-light views and half a dozen kmematographio pictures, which were reproductions of pictures actually taken by Professor Spencer in tho course of a trip, taken in conjunction with Mr J. Gillon, fiom Adelaide right across the continent of Austulia to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The photographs portrayed the aborigines in their native state from infancy right up to the time of their death, and even after death, for the various burial ceremonies v,ere shown on the screen. In addition to the views, Professor Spencer took a number of phonographic records during his trip, and these were also g-\en. The Professor's lecture was most interesting, and was frequently applauded. Mr Justice Chapman mo-ied a hearty vote of thanks to Professor Spencer for the lecture he had delivered. No move interesting lecture, he said, had eve- hcvu heard in Dunedin ; the audience had literally been cnrried to the centre of Australia. — (Applause.) Mr A. Hamilton seconded the motion, which was put to the meeting by the Prescient, and carried by acclamation. The lantern by moan« of which the were shown nas manipulated by Mr A. Fieldwick.
