"One thousand pounds for a dog!" he exclaimed, 0,3 he looked tip from his newspaper. "Do you believe anyone ever paid any such price, Maria?" "I'm sure I don't know, James," she returned, without stopping her needlework oven for a moment. "Doos the- paper gay that rnuoh was paid?" "Yes. There's an article on valuable dogs, and it speaks of one that was cold for a thousand pounds I don't believe it!" "If; may be true, James," she said, quietly. "Some of these w^ell-bred animals bring fancy pricss, and there's no particular reason why the paper should he about it." "I know that, Maria; but just think of it! Just try to grasp the magnitude of that sura in your weak, feminine mind. You don't soem to realise it. One thousand pounds for a dog ! Why, hang it, Maria, that's mors than I'm worth!" "I know it, James, but some are worth more than others." She went calmly on with her sewing, while he fumed and sputtered for a moment, and then dropped the subject, especially the weak, feminine, mind part of it.
