The Blueskin Agricultural and Pastoral Society opened its thirty-sixth annual show at Waitati on Friday. Unfortunately the weather conditions were similar to those prevailing at the last annual fixture, heavy cold rain falling frequently during the afternoon, and naturally the attendance euffered very mr.ch in consequence. The ground was sodden and wet, and the roads in the vicinity ankle deep in mud, so that a visit to the show was attended by some clegree of discomfort. The entries were, on the whole, better than last year, while the stock generally was in a most commendably fine show condition, and of a very high average of quality, cearoely an " out-class " animal appearing in tho ring. The society has no section for sheep, considering that there is no real sheep country in the vicinity, though it was noticable that exhibits in tKe % Ayrshire cattle section came from as far north as Goodwood, in Waihemo. The swine, poultry, and dog sections provided only very email entries, but tihe- dairy produce exhibits staged in a hall in the township, were in very good number, and some close competitions resulted. Only one exhibit of fancy butter was shown, but that was a very fine work of art, and its bu;Mf*r 'Joeervos every credit for the workmanship. In the cattle sections the Ayrshires were most numerous, and all through were a fin© lot ; indeed, the Blueskin. district seems particularly forward in Ayrshire cattle. Mr D. M'Gregor's fine aged bull was the only entry in that class, and was awarded first and champion ; the animal was one, however, that could face the ring at many a larger show. Four two-year-olds
came forward — a very even lot, well brecTi and in beautiful condition. Mr P. Ireland, of Goodwood, a well-known breeder and a> prizetakor at Oamai-u, Diuiedin, and elsewhere in Ayrshires, had two of his stud forward, and they secured first and second, the Seachff Asylum exhibit having to tako third place. For yearlings there were esvem . entries, and Mrs EL B. Forguson, another \ well-known, exhibitor, cecured pride of ' place. Tho prize animal in another yean '' should be a very fine specimen of the Ayrshire breed, and Mrs Ferguson's stock would! be welcome agaui at the metropolitan show H For cows in milk and dry cows Mrs Ferguson took pride of pL-ice, in front of boll* Mr P. Ireland and Mr D. M'Gregor, buir in heifers Mr Ireland scored for both dry and milking three-year-olds. Ia the cLase of animals bred _by exhibitor Mrs Ferguson; took first, with Mr Ireland second andl third, the- first-named taking the championship in oows. The crossbred cattle were a* good, useful lot for dairy purposes anct I every animal shown wao good. Two goo 4 1 shorthorn aged bulls were forward, Mr J. Pullar's exhibit, a true type, of ehortharr r • taking first, wibh Mitchell Bros, second.. '• For cows, Mitchell Bros, wore to the front, ' and Mr P. Ireland for cow 3 for dairy purposes, though his exhibit in three-year h&ifer3 was beaten by two fina anirnalo I shown by Mr A. Park. Mr Ireland secured I firsts in both two-year heifera and yearlings, - Mrs Ferguson's pair being second in tho latter class. Only four Aldcrneys were , forward. The borsce throughout were good, "* and eorao of tho draught geldings were especial'y fine. Turoo aged entries were entered, but only two came forward, tha> frst priza pnd ehampi-omliip being awarded to Mr J. Clark's (Waitati) Albyn's JLTince, by Prince of Albyn out of Jewel, by Cox's Superior (imp). Albyn's Prince is a very,_ handsome dark brown horse, over 17 hands, of immense frame, and wae shown in superb condition. He was imported frorrx Melbourne. Mr F. M'C-allum, of Flag Swamp, look teeond p^.acs with Lord (3ecil r by Hatfiold out of a Craig ie-rar mare. Lord Cecil, a handsome specimen of the> ClvdK>sdale breed, was bred by Mr J. Go-w, of tho Taieri. For cne-year animals the-re were four entries, Mr R. Hagan, of Tum-ai, securing first, with 2ilr W. Diack socond. Four brood mares faced tho judges, Mrs K. B. Ferguson's exhibit securing pride of place and also the championship. Mr W. Part wa3 successful in two-year geldings or fillies — a grand ring all through, — and Mr T. White in yearlings. Six dry marco wea-e entered, and the first prize was allotted to Mr A. Dodd's exhibit, with Mr J. Townsond second. No thoioyghbred stall rons were entered, but there were thrc-3 breed marea, and in this ola^s Mr D. Ferguson sccred first, Mr A. Orbcll carying off th 3 pr^za ia tho cians for dry rnsres, gell't.?*. or nlhee. The hacks were a very good lot. and the competition was very cleFe in c^ay of the 6!a«ses.
