At the annual meeting of the Wellington Meat Expor!, Company, held this afternoon, the chairman of directors (Mr W. C. Buchanan) said that the balance sheet was most satisfactory. Seventy-one thousand one hundred and twenty mora animals were dealt with during the year than in the previous year, ancl they would havo exceeded even this number if ths capacity of the works equalled the demand. A most gratifying feature was the increase hi the number of stock frozen on account of owners. The prices paid- settlers for stock had been substantially higher than for a good many years. It was proposed to extend the works to an extent to. enable them to Seal with 2000 _iaore sheep per day in time for the next- season. INVEECAEGILL GRAIN AND PRODUCE / MARKET. (Feoic Ocb Own- Corbesfondent.) INVERCARGILL, August 16. There is very little to report in the oat market. Offerings from the country are very limited,, and very few parcels of B grade, the bulk beingto some extent discoloured. B grade is holding its place in the market, but poorei qualities are easier. The Essex is now at the Bluff loading for Durban and Capetown, taking 16,000 sacks of oats, 80 head of cattle, 4-100 carcases oE mutton, seven horses, and a number of 'dairy cows. This oat shipment should clear the stores' at the Bluff somewhat, and create a little demand. Buyers are paying up to Is 8d \i.o.h at Bluff) for* B grade and Is- 7d for O grade. Fowl wheat is rather ouietcr this last week, and good whole samples are now selling at from 3s Id to 3s 2d. In milling wheat there is nothing doing. Small lines of linseed are occasionally offering, prices ranging from £9 15s to £10 (f.0.b.). Chaff is dull, and may be quoted at £2. 5s to ;£2 7s Gd on trucks. Even at this price it is high compared with the present price of oats. Supplies of fat sheep are becoming exhausted, but with 'the favourable fattening weather we have had lately several mobs have beeu putting on condition in grand stylo. Prices still keep firm at 20s each for -prime freezers, while occasionally line?, under keen competition, fetch 22s to 23s under the hammer. First class store hoggets range from 12s to 13s 6d; medium and inferior, down to 10a. The demand for all classes of store stock etill continues strong, and the abundance of feed is unusual for Ihis time of the year. Throughout; the district the past season has been a most successful one for dairy farmers, the lljd perlb for butter fat at Mataura being equal to a return of £12 from each good dairy cow for the

leason. There can be no doubt that there is a great future for dairying in Southland. One may say that £10 pei.acre is an average" price for good grazing land, and an acre will graze one cow during suinmor. For a man with a family there is nothing to compare with dairying for ready money — except, perhaps, publichouse keeping.
