The latest development of industrial unionism is the formation at Tokarahi of a Cowboys' Union. Thoso engaged at the occupation of miiking consider the wages too low and the- hours too long, and the union has been formed with the following rules:— That cowboys over 16 be paid £1 per weok; that co\\bo}-s get one "Sunday off every month ; mo cowboy to milk moro than 12 cows; that nine hours constitute a day's work; that cowboys get a half-holiday a week. A copy of tiiese rules will be forwarded to the non. T. Y. Duncan, and delegates are to cpeak at various places advocating the extension of the union. A presentation was made last evening by tho members of St. Paul's Church to Mr John Annand, who is leaving; hero for Dunediii shortly. He has been an elder of St. Paul's for 19 year-!, and is highly cstecmod. The presentation consisted of a purse of sovereigns, which wr.ll accompanied l>y many expressions of appreciation for past effort? for the church and good wi=hes for his fufure. Memontocs \\cio also handed to the Mi?ses Annand for valuable work done in other branches of church acii\ ity. August 13. At a special meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, Cr Waddell raked a strong; but ineffectual protest against the action of the. sp<?e;al meeting of Saturday, when a.n informal meeting decided to procure 300 tracks of Porb Chalmers stone for foreshore protection. Cr Waddell strongly urged the consideration, of tho erection of new gasworks eUewhere, and using as much as possible of the present plant, but he was not supported by more than Cr M'Diarmid. With these two objectors the aotion of Saturday's meeting was confirmed. Cr Waddell Paid that three years ago the gasworks could have been protected at a cost of £60 — certainly lees tha.n £100, — showing that a policy of procrastination has cost something like £1000. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association has granted the Caledonian Society an exioneion of the lease aisked by them, and rearrangement of the show grounds will now be necessary. The Caledonian Sooiety is

to bear the cost, which is estimated at abo-at £300.
