WETHERSTONES.

August 10. — When at Lawrence last Thursday I wps surprised to see from the top of Peel sheet the quantity of snow on the hills. To show the severity of the frost here I may mention that about 200 yards- on the Waipori road, above the Wetherstones School, there' is a leak at a joint in the Golden Rise pipes, where the water spurting out has frozen as> it fell, till now there is a miniature iceberg or glacier about 30ft in circumference and over 3ft in thickness. It is of pure ice. I tried to poke my walking-stick through it, thinking it was soft, but I might as well have tried to put it through Lawyer's Head for all the impression I made. On Monday, 3rd inst., there was snow, hail, and rain. The following; day was not much better, though with a high barometer (29.70, falling). The rest cf the week was fine, there being frost some mornings. Barometer on the evening of the 6th, down to 2^7, rising. The next day was a beautiful day. On Saturday forenoon there was n. 2f.W. gale, but fine. It changed to S.W. in the afternoon, with heavy Tain, which lasted a. few hours; bar., 29.42,. rising. We have had fine clear weather since; bar., 29.90. This morning there was frost, and the thermometer at 8 a.m. wasat 24deg. This makes a bad lookout for the Golden Crescent water race being relieved from ice. The highest reading of the thermonister was. GOdeg at noon of the Sth. Rainfall for July, 2.4 in.
