KAITUNA BOWLING CLUB.

The annual meeting of the Kaituna Bowl- I ing Club was held in the Jubilee Hall, Aha , 6trcet, on Mcaiday. There was a large attendance of members, aud the president (Mr 'G. B. Dall) was in the chair. Apologies for absence were forwarded by Messrs A. W. Stables, R. W. Clarkson, J. H. Walker, and C. S. Spaul. The following is a summary of the annual report, which was read by the Secretary (Mr J. Park Smith): — In presenting the report for the past season, your committee feel that they can congratulate members on a veiy successful and enjoyable year. Although not bles&cd with a bowler's summer, many keen and interesting games were fought out. The games between the various clubs to decide who shou'.d be the holders of the N.Z.B.A. banner foi the ensuing season proved -very interesting. The Dunedin Club proved the victors., losing only one match, while .the Kaituna Club was well up, having lost two games — namaly, against Dunedin and Taieri. A club single championship was initiated during the past season, 20 members entering for the ;ontest, and provided many well-fought games and close finishes. The pride of place was, secured by G. B. Dall, the retiring president, who won 17 games, Mr Sneddou filling second place with 16 games, and Mr Paterson th:rd with 15 games. The Colour matches, which formerly proved such a source oi enjoyment, were not nearly so keenly contested as in previous year 3, due no doubt to the Championship Singles taking up such a lot of time, and to th» bad weather prevailing during the greater part of th-e season. The club trophies, to be presented r.t the meeting, have been won by the following gentlemen : —President's prize, Mr H. W Reid ; Vicepresidents priKP, Mr Connell ; 'lirectors' prize, Mr T. Sutchffe; pairs, Messrs Connell (skip) [ and Walker; rinks— Messrs H. W Reid (skip), J. Sanders, jun., T. Sutcliffe, and A. W. ' Stables; champion of the club, 111 G. B. Dull ; second champion of the club, Mr Sneddon. The club was well represented at th<> Christchurch, ] Oamaru, sind Invercargill tournaments. Mr Sneddon carn«d off third prize in the Singles at .Christchuicb, and, Mr Dall's link— with , i

whom were associated Msssrs C. T. Paterson, J. P. Smith, and Lindsay— secured second prize ut Osmani, -while Mt J. Sanders, juu., carried off thiul prize at Invercargill. Your committee feel that they can congratulate members on the successful game played on Anniversary Day, which again took the* form of a progressive rink match, and they hope that the match wi'l become an annual fixture. On the cards being handed m it was found that Mi Martin had gained first prize and Mr Taylor second. Your committee beg to report that the subject of weeds has been given vary careful consideration during th-e Eea c 'on, and, acting under the advice of experts, they hsve laid down a quantity of garden salt on the part affected with j lud-a-bid. The committee feel that it is hirdly ' necessary to remind -mem-bers of the condition in which our caretaker (Mr Hollingwcrth) has kept the green, notwithstanding the many difficulties lie has had to contend with. The club has to thank Mrs Reid-for having again ur.dertaken the arduous duties ol arranging for the afternoon teas, and the other ladies who so kindly cams forward and provided the same. Your committee regret having to notify tht! club that -an 'esteemed member (Mt James ' Eattray) has found it necessary to resign, and ' the committee unanimously irecorumend that inconsideration of "the juany valuable services rendered by Mr Rattray to the club m the past, he bs elected a life member. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, said he thought members might be fairly congratulated upon the balance sheet -submitted to the meeting. The details were fully set out, and the only part he need refer to was that they practically had a surplus on the year's doings of £20. This, he thought, was v satisfactory position. The report really gave a. lull account of the doings, of the club for the past i year, and he did not think left much for him to say. They were all aware that the weather during the past season was not tho best they might have had for bowling, but, notwithstanding this, it was very gratifying to find the keen interest member^»hacl taken in tho game. They had had a splendid attendance on the green during- both the evenings and flic Saturday afternoons, which went to show that members were quite alive to the grand old game of bowls. The games for the club'-s trophies were all very well contested, and the winners were to be congratulated upon the form they displayed. The single-handed championship was v new feature at Kaituna, and no doubt produced some good contests, but it might be advisable for -the incoming committee to consider some different method of conducting the championship, on account of the length of time occupied in each player meeting every other player. In the club matches lie thought they might claim to hsve been fairly successful. They had iiofc managed to bring the pennant to .Kaituna, but they had only suffered two defeats. In referring to the tournaments, he said they were aware that there were t-o many competitors at a tournament that it was -something to be proud of to bring home a trophy. With regard to Mr Rattray, he was sure the recommendation of tho committee would meet with entire approval, for they all regretted Mr Jlattniy's resignation. They had had a good deal of trouble with the bid-a-bid, but they liad fiven them two doses of "physic." and had now put on lime to "dry 'their . bones," and he believed their epitaph was in 1 hand, co that they might look forward to 1 a good green in the coming season. i Jlr C. 6. Paler^on sfcoiided the at?op- j tion of the report and balance <-hect, which, t after some flight discussion, was carried. 1 The Tennis Committec'p report, which was 1 adopted on the motion of Jlr C. J. Payne, staled that the membership had increased, ' arid now stood at 43 gentlemen and 41 ladies. I The subscriptions were £7 in excess of last i year. In the Saturday afternoon matches, i promoted by the association, the club came < second. At the annual tournament the 1 Ladies' Championship Singles was won by t Mips L. Livingstone: Ladies' Handicap i Singles, Miss L. Livingstone; Combined ( Handicap Doubles, Miss Graham and Mr P. i Haggitt; and Men's Handicap Doubles, t Messrs Hairgitt and Paterson. In the club I matches Messrs £ Brown aaid P. Braithwaite won the Men's Handicap Doubles, ( and Mis? L. Livingstone the Ladies' Cham- 1 pion Singles. The top court had been re- i laid during the year with a properly covered v drain at a :ost of £53. After paying all t debts there was a credit balance of £5 10s c 2d,- while there were no liabilities, and all subscriptions had been paid. The election of oftiee-bearerf. resulted as . follows:— President, Mr C. J Payne; vice- c president, Captain Suudstrom ; secretary and i, treasurer, Mt J Park Smith ; auditor, Mr a W. Foa-roter : General Committee — Mesors r U. B. Dull (separately elected;, J. W. c

Smith, P. C. Corli?6, W. Taylor, J. A. Haslet t, C. T. Paterson, and D. M'Pherson; Match Committee — Messrs G. B. Dall and C. J. Payne ; delegates to the association — Messrs G. B. Dall and J. Park Smith; and Green Committee — Messrs C. J. Payne, D. M'Plierson, and W. Taylor.

Mr Paterson said it had bean decided a year ago that no life members should bo appointed, except for services rendered. He thought they could very well propose that Mr James Rattray be elected a life member. Mr Rattray had always been a very active member of the club, and had taken great interest in it. He had, besides, never refused a donation to the club, and had been very generous in making the plantation at the end of the tennis court." He moved that — "In consideration of the services rendered to the club from time to time by Hx James Ratrray, Tie be elected a life member of tho club."— Seconded by Mr C. R. Smith and carried unanimously.

The trophies won during the past season were then presented by the Chairman, after which a pleasant hour was Gpent in social intercourse.
