ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
AMBULANCE SATURDAY.
For the finst time in it- history the Dunedin branch of the St John Ambulance Association observed an " ambulance day " on the 27th ult., when a general appeal was made to the public for assistance towards the funds of this valuable body When the Dunrdin public finds a de«crvmg institution requiring assistance it is not flow to contribute, and consequently the amount collected on. Saturday was a creditable cum. and there is every reason to believe that the association might eucces»fully make "'Ambulance Saturday" an annual institution, for its good and iiaoful work has been brought prominently before the public of late, and will come even more under notice when the new ambulance waggon is a\ailable iv cases of emergency. About, 11 o'clock on Saturday morning ladies, wearing the badge of the association, wero htationed at the principal corners along George and Princes streets, and passers-by wore cour teously invited to drop a'cvin into tho col-
lection box. Other collectors proceeded to the football match at the Caledonian Groundduring the afternoon. At half-past 3 tho boxes were all called in, and the total amount collected proved to be £53 5s 3£d, which contribution will enable the association to carry on its work in a much more extended form. Every credi 1 is due to the lades who so kindly assisted, and they express themselves as highly pleased with the manner in which their requests were met by the public. Tho committee desires to thank the public for its generous response to the appeal, and it will be satisfaction to contributors to know that their assistance will enable the association to extend its field of labour very materially. There were probably many people desirous of aiding the work of the association who did not have tho opportunity on Saturday to contribute, and for any further subscriptions that may be forthcoming boxes will "be placed at the Bible Depot in Princes street and at the shop of Mi's Smith, florist, at the Grand Hotel corner.
Wednesday, the 15th day of July inst., will be observed as a public holiday in the Government offices throughout New Zealand for the celebration of Arbor Day.
