BENEVOLENT TRUSTEES.

The usual weekly meeting of the Benevolent Trustees was held m Wednesday afternoon, tlieie being present— Messrs P Treseder (in tho chair), W. Talboys, J. Green, R. M. Clark, R. Wilson, J. Thomson, W. Burnett, and ,A. Tapper. The Secretary reported that John St. Crouc. aged 61, died in the institution during the week

Tho monthly ontdoor relief book lor Juno showed that the number o. cases totalled 325, comprising 129 men, 230 vromea, and 510 children, at a weekly cost of £107 Gs 6d. For June of last year tho cases numbered 318 (129 men, 228 women, 550 children), at a weekly cost of £103 17s 6d.

Tne cost of maintenance in the institution for the month of May was £352 12s 2d. The cases totalled 2-11, the average cost per head per week be'ng 6s 6}d.

A parcel of illustrated papers from Messrs Whitcombe and Tomb 3 was received with, thanks.

Mr Clark mentioned that owing to the absence of Mr Treseder, one of the committee to consider the question of approaching the Government for the purpose of obtaining «, farm £or the employment of able-bodied men in the institution, they had not yet been able to hold 3, meeting.— Tho Chairman, who was welcomed' on his release from the recent quarantine regu!a.tions, said that he did not consider tha thing would bo at a.l practicable. His opinion was that they should strongly 'mpress upon the Government the desirability of altering the laws, so that this country should not be made a dumping giound for the Commonwealth.

Information has reached the authorities at Brisbane in connection" with the murder of a Chinaman at Kirklie, near Ayr, that the autopsy shows the man to have been brutally murdered, and tho person who first reported the matter has been ai rested.
