LUGGAT E
June 28.— We had a siVil of dry wcother last week, and it was v.-o'eome as Jt had lSin^c] erough to do us for =omio t.nie. ll re could only get as much in the siiim^ or summer it •would ba a good thing, but low, vlipn the lulls ftre whits with snow, v.-c can do very well without nsin. We fnrmers think we are badly off, hut if we only had a better market ■we should uot complain. Just now it :s veiy good, but whon thero aro good crops running •for a year or two the market is very poor. Through the railway being so far off we unfortunately have not a regular market for such s>, large quantity of produce as this district can grow. Still, net taking tbe market into consideration, we are better rff than many who have not even yet got their crops gathered. 7 have been for .a trip lately, and went over the Wcwn Hange in the beginning of May. and ."o my surprise I s-.w splendid crops still uncut on the Crown Terrace; and mam," of tkuni
[ were qniie gTeen, while a gTeat deal was still in st&ok. This seemed fearful to me at the time, but I got quits used to it when I went down south. I thought Dm.edm was a wet place, but Invercargiil beats it hollow , though pc-ssibly it was an exceptionally wet time while I w2s there. It would be a very nice place were it not so wet. The large timber out Bay road way was quite a treat to see, after living so long where there are no trees except thosa planted around our homesteads. I found great pleasure in walking a'ong tho beach gathering shells — and such pretty ones. The road from Invercargiil to the br.y was in a very bad state — big holes full of wat=r, and the rcid \v?s so wet that you could not see when you were going into or.c. 1 was surprised to see such a road so rear the tor.-n. "Were our roads in such a state there would bs a great ncise about it A Felt Want— A doctor is badly needed up here. If anyone takes ill they have either to ptty a terrible rum to get medical aid, as the distance fiom Cromwell is so great, or go into the hospital, ar.ay from horn© and friends, or else go for & trip. 1 think it is high time something was dene to get a doctor in this place, or somewhere in the neighbourhood. Mis M'Leod, lata of Sandy Point, who died a short time ago, was a year or two ago a stror.g, healthy woman. Sbe was ailmg some time before she left, but neglected going to a doctor until it was to. Ir-te. Ihc poor woman sola out, and went down country to be neaT a doctor, but the case v.-is too far gone, and she diad after being away aboi't three t monthq. She was a very old resident. Mr J. M'Ljnghlan, of Luggite, lost a little son last wesk, and I hear Mr Thompson, scliocjmseter at "V'anaka, has had to go down country to undergo, it is believed, an operation. Improvements. — Mr Thomas Anderson, miller, Luggnte, has just had built a large gTanary, -and Mr J. M'Lenghlan is getting a large hall built opposite his hotel. The Luggato has goria ahead thase two years. We want facilities for getting postal notes or post office | orders at Lugga-te. This was a want that was felt budly at Huw-ea. for many years, but they now have their want supplied; but it is of very liUle good to the folk here, as it is about nine miles from Luggate to Hawea. Dredging. — Tho Upper Clut'ha dredge is sunk, cjid I hear she is to be taken to pieces and shifted. The Golden Chain is shut down, so dredging has not bren svtcces-ful so far v? here. Settlement. — Mr John Kane, of Grandview, has taken up and fenced a large areti of lnnd.
A New Rabbit Trap.— Mr Thos. Ussher Goodall, of A'beitown, has invented and patented a, self-setting rabbit trap, and I h°.ar everyone say it is ft capital invention, and should sell well. When the trapper take 3 out his rabbit, all he haa to do is to cover the trap, and it is set ready for lim. It is a pity the trap was not shown at tho Duncdm winter show. Tho show was, I thought, a splendid sight, but what took m^ fancy most were the beautiful sheep.
