This memorial, erected by Captain James Cook to commemorate the observation of the Transit of Venus, June 3, 1765, was tettored and fenced round by the Local Administration, of Tahiti, and this plate was placed h»re by the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Sooiety in 1901.

The late Sir Robert Menzies, 27th Chief of the Clan Menzies, who died on April 22, aged 85. Sir Robert was a near relative of the late Dr J. A. R. Menzies, of Southland, and there was a striking resemblance noticeable between the relatives. —From the Glasgow Weekly.

This picture is an interior view of the book shop of Mr Thomas Bain, of Danneyiike, who is credited with having one of the finest shops of its kind outside the four big cities of the colony. Mr Bain, who is tn old Dunedin boy, is one of the oldest agents for -»c Witness in the North Island provincial districts.

The late Mr David Gardiner, who died at Roslyn on January 4, in hia 94th year, was engaged as carrier to tha goldfieida during the early days of the rush, and has resided at Roslyn ever since, up to the time of his death, last week.
