ADELAIDE, June 18

Mr Russell French, the retiring president of the Inter-State Chambers of Commerce, said that he considered Mr Chamberlain's preferential scheme a fine one. June 19. At the Conference of Chambers of Commerce the president moved the following resolution :— " That the adoption by the Commonwealth of preferential trade relations is calculated to place the export trade of Australia at a serious disadvantage, and is inimical to the best interests of commerce." An amendment declaring that the question required earnest thought and consideration, and that the conference was unable to express an opinion until they were more fully acquainted with the details of the proposals, 'Was carried by one vote. A motion protesting against the representations made in certain official quarters that Australia was in favour of preferential duties, without any expression of opinion having been obtained from representative commercial bodies, was carried, as was a motion urging the Federal Government to secure the repeal of enactments imposing a double income tax in Britain and the. colonies.
