THE SOUTH AFRICAN SERVICE
THE ESSEX LEAKING. SYDNEY, June 22. The departure of the steamer Essex for South Africa -will be* delayed owing to the discovery that she was making considerable water, in the holds both fore and aft. After the pumps had cleared her an examination disclosed that the ca,ulking in the &eanis and some of the plates had given way, probably caused by the straining during the rough weather she had experienced on her run from Wellington. It will be necessary to discharge a considerable portion of her cargo in order to remedy the defects. The work of tinloading was begun to-day. Discharging the Essex is proceeding preparatory to docking. Probably all the frozen meat will require to be landed. A quantity of cargo, principally grain, in No. 5 hatch is reported to be damaged by water. It lias been ascertained that the leakage was caused, by her rivets at the bend of the bilge having started. The full extent of the damage will not be known till the vessel has been docked. The* agents claim that the leak is no more than what is common in new steel vovsol'-, and that she could have made the voyage to South Africa, in perfect «afety. Tho leak was first noticed on the voyage from Wellington.
