Chess Match. OAMARU V. TIMARU.
A match by tel-egraph between the Oamaru and Timaxu Chess Clubs was comm«&nced on Saturday evening, tho 13th inst., with fourteen players aside, who were arrayed against each other in battle strength as under. — Oamaau. Timaru. Adair v. Mason Gould v. T. Mara Banks v. Cox Mowbray v. Chapman Earl v. Hassall Garland v. P. Maia. Burns v. Cuthberb M'NicolL v. Cresswell Kennedy v. Gourley Patterson v. Maca lister R'co v. Werrj Armstrong v. Wood Lindsay v. Walton Cron v. Bowker Mr. Collin» aafceel as umpire for the Oamaru Club and Mr C. Roberts filled a similar office for Timaru. Messrs Murdoch and Bennett wero the telegraphists engaged, and both displayed caro and expedition with the work. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Adair v. Mason. — The former selected Philidor'g Defence, and at the closo of the night's play rho position was even. Gould v. Mara. — The Omaruviaii attacked with the Ruy Lopez. Queens were exchanged at a.n early stage, and the game is an open one. Banks v. Ccx. — Another Ruy Lopez7 with no apparent advantage as yet on either side. Mowbray v. Ch-u.pman. — The Oaniaru man opened with tho Ruy Lopez. A cumber of exchanges took plaos, but the game has iiofc reached a decisive sta^e. Earl v. Hassall. — B.ack adopted PetrofFs defence, and so far the. game is an even one. Garland v. Mara. — Tho former offered Uio Danish Gambit, which his opponent refused 1 , and a variation of the Scotch Gambit ensued. Mr Mara has still the advantage of tho pawn SKicrificed at the opening. Burns v. Cuthbcrt. — Mr Burns played tha Sicilian Defence, and at present bh-o g-aone is even. Kennedy v. Cresswell.— Mr Kennedy selected the Vienna opcmiiig, and appears to havo a slight advantage. Patterson v. Gourley.— White open.sd with bh.B Ruy Lopez. Mr Patterson has a pawn to the good. Rios v. Macalifjter.— Mi Rice played the Scotoh Gambit, and is working up an attack gradually. M'Nicoll v. Werry. — A Ponziani opening, and so far not fruitful of results. Armstrong v. Wood.— A Giuoco Piano opening. The game, is still in its infancy. Lindsay v. Walton.— Mr Lindsay adapted the French Defeaice, and when play ceaocd for the night had superiority of position. Cron v. Bowk^T.— Mr Cron selected the Scotch Gambit, and so fai tho game has not proceeded 1 further than the initial stages. Play in the match was resumed laet Saturday evening, but on cessation of hostilities at 11.45 p.m. only three games were concluded. In Adair v. Mason a diaw was agToed upon ; Mr Rice beat Mr Macahster, and Mr P. Mara succumbed to Mr Garland. Present indications point to a win for Oamatu, but in consequence of the large numbar of unfinished games, it waa agreed to resume tho contest next Saturday evening.
