CLINTON.

June 8. — The weather, winch, as in other places recently, has been wet and cold, haa at last cleared, and frost with the usual fine, sunny day 3 reigns instead. Fortunately, in this part we are high above sea level, and do K ot suffer from floods. The ground, however, n very wet, and threshing and other farm operations are At a standstill. There are one or two who have still crop in the stook, and I hear that °hould a good drying day come and put the stuff in order, neighbours ore to turn out in force and have it secured as soon as possible.

Cricket. — Our cr.cketera were to have held a concert on Friday evening last, but the night was so rough that tiaffic hod to be put off. The Balclutha Minstrels wore to have given the major portion of the entertainment, but got word not to come, as the outlook was too gloomy. I understand that the concert will tuke place on Wednesday night next, when there should be a. good house. News-vending.— Mt Jack Hall, who has for many years— vi fact, perhaps all his life— been a resident of our town, has taken over the paper and fruit business so long run by Mr D. Nicol on tho train. I wish him success vi Ins undertaking. Town Board.— The Town Board met on Monday night last, -when a considerable amount of business was disposed of. The only matter that caused any friction was Mr E. Irving'a application to place a gate in the new fence erected by the board. This fence cut off Mr Irvn:g'9 acce°s to the Kurnvao estate, and seemed to compel him to make a ford for himself. The ford would cost about £4, which would b<" a job for ever, whereas the entrances through the board' 3 turnips would cost about £20, besides being only temporary. The request, however, was granted, four members voting for it and three against. Dunedin Show. — A large number of people from this part made their way to Dunedin lost week to see the show, and, from accounts, seem to have been pleased with what they saw. In fat stock it is clearly evident that down here we cannot compete with our friends in the north, and some time, perhaps before long, it may be neccmcy for the society, 111 order to ensure good competition, to make two r Ussps — one for the noith of Dunedin and one foi the south.
