SYNOD OF OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND.
The opening meeting of the Provincial Bynod of Ofcago and Southland took place in First Churob *n Monday, when, outside members of synod, there was a fair attendance of church members.
Prior to the commencement of the evenang's business the Rev. J. M. M'Kerrow, {8.A., the retiring moderator, preached an timpressive sermon from the text, Isaiah, Jchapter SO, verse 4 : " The Lord hath given cue the tongue of the learned that I should jesow how to speak a word in- eeason to foim that- Is weary," after which the observSance of the. The nomination of the Key, A. Cameron, «r .Anderson's Bay. as moderator was leeeived with applause, and the appointment approved. In welcoming his successor to his. seat, the retiring moderator said no man bad dene better or more faithlul service the church in certain departments than Mr Cameron. In matters academical he was has leader of their church, and had devoted m. great amount of time, attention, and patient labour to this work. He wa-5 thaiikcul* to mate way to so able and efficient a man.
• Tbe Rev. Mr Cameron thanked thp synod for, the honour conferred on him, and hoped they would give him all the support needtrul' in the discharge of the 3uties of the office.
On the motipn of the Rev. Dr Gibb, seconded by the Rev. A. Dalrymple. it was reyblved— " That the Rev. J. A. Will, of ILowrence, be nominated moderator of the text synod."
APFOrNTMKKT OF COMMITTEES
The Rev. D. Borrie's order of business r* x>rt was approved and adopted.
The following were appointed a committea to draw up memorial miuutes relating to deceased ministers and others: — The Reis. t~. Chisholm (convener) W. "Wright. S. W. Currie, A. M. Dalrymple. and A. Gray.
