HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governor? of the Otago Boys' and Girls' High SchooL was. held on. the 7th; present— Mr J. R. Sinclair (in the chair), the Rev. P. B. Fraser, aud Mr J. A. Park (mayor). Apologies for non-attendance were received from Dr Brown and the Rev. A. Cameron. lire Garvie wrote asking that section par. 2 of 60, block 11, Oamaru, at present occupied by R. Mills, be offered for lease m two lots.— Request declined. Miss Marchant, lady principal of the Girls High School, wrote stating that the roll now stood at 148. The new pupils (73 in all) were working well. Very few of trem woulJ ro oi) to tho University, and to do the best for them she would like very much to have some more technical work. Latin, Euclid, and algebra would be all but useless, and the pupils would be more usefully employed in learning dressmaking, cooking, bookkeeping, or shorthand.— Referred to the chairman to confer with Miss Marchant and report to another meeting. The Chairman reported that the committees appointed for the purpose had drafted regulations for the admission of pupi's to free places -on the basis of revenue from endowments, and had submitted the sain 1 ) to the Minister of Education for his approval, also that an advertisement had been inserted *o the effect that 12 free places are vacant, and that up to the present application* ha«\ been received from eight boys and 23 girls. — Tho tegulations were as follows: — "Such free places as remain after places have been allotted to those pupils whe qualify undor tho board's regulations granting free places to competitors at the Education Board echolarships examinations shall be allotted to such pupik as were not over 14- years and 6 months' when they passed the Sixth Standard and are not on the rolls of the echools The board will make the selection from applicants either by examination or in such other way as may seem best calculated to confer the free places upon those most deserving." — The Secretary read a telegram from the Minister of Education, who stated that he would be unable to send a definite reply re approval of the regulations until the end of the week. — It was resolved to hold a special meeting of the board next Tuesday jEHjght to fteal with the Tna.tw-Ar-
