WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Waihemo County Council, was held a;t Palmerston on Saturday; presentsMr M. Isbister (chairman), Crs D. Ross, I. Ross, .T.- Muir,- K. Matheson, Clark, ,Griffen, Cameron, and Philip. inspector's repoht. The Inspector (Mr G. Cruickshanks) reported that in Dunback he had repaired the suspension bridge which had been damaged by mischievous, persons. One of the under -stay braces had been worn through by people swing- - ing the bridge needlessly. He would require a supply of bluegum timber as he had to repair the bridge on Factory • road, .Blue Mountain, , «,nd also repair a culvert at Brown's. He had visited the road at Nenthorn complained of, and recommended a few loads, of jschiat.— -The report , was adopted, and the inspector authorised tot procure a truck of timber. The inspector was also instructed to attend to Heffernan's road* and effect -repairs to Hyde-Macraes road, the latter work not 'to exceed a cost of £10. COBBKSPONDENCE. T. J. Steeles (Auckland) brought under the council's notice an " improved method of burning clay for road metal and other purposes."— It was decided to obtain, further, particulars' as to cost, etc. ' " - Charles Crump, late county clerk, offeredhi \ furniture in the council chamber to the council for £10 10s.— It was resolved to accept the' offer. • . * \. W. Murray (Dunback) wrote complaining' oi the action of the council's ranger in impounding two horses. — Received. ° The Department of Lands and Survey wrote m reply to a query from tho council, that tha Land Board did not grant permission to P. A. Connolly to erect a fence across the road at the) Fillyburn, or to fence in the gravel resexya described as section 6, block XI, Rock ' and Pillar. He held a temporary license over' section 47, block VII and section 5, block XI, .and! cowld, of course, fence .these. — O» Or Clark*. • - motion it was decided to adhere to a previous, resolution to have the fences removed.— An. amendment by Cr Griffon that . the. fences be allowed to remain but that the .necessary gates be erected, lapsed for want of a seconder. ■ •The Treasury Department forwarded £1 4a goldfields revenue. — Received. James Moir's (Dunedin) price schedule for dog callors was accepted. ' John Ritchie was appointed dog tax collector. On the motion of Cr J. Ross it was resolved 1 to instruct the inspector to call for tenders for repairs to Goodwood-Bushy road. - On Cr Clark's motion the inspector was instructed to report on Curries road. The tender of Jamas Kitchen for gravelling Stenhouse zoad was accepted at £59 7s 6d. Accounts amounting to £208 7s 3d were passed for payment. It -was decided to offer £5 for information leading to the conviction of persons -damoging -the. council's bridges or other property. /It was ,stotetl' that' the- Palmerston Borough ■Council. had the use of 'the .county chamber and paid, .nothing ,for the privilege, "while it-charged-the wmniy • ordinary rates. — The clerk was p - structed to report on the" matter. With reference to the statement currenV regarding a scheme for the improvement of the system of defence in this colony, alleged to have been propounded by Majorgeneral Babington, the New* Zealand Times states that neither Major-general Babingion nor the Right Hon. the Premier knows -anything of any such scheme. On Wednesday, the 17th inst., at Naseby, Bro. William Grumitt, P.G.J.W., visited the Mount Ida Lodge of Freemasons, and by invitation of the W.M., Bro. C. Cutten, occupied fhe chair. . Bro. Grumitt inaugurated the lodge in 1868. was" the fust W.M., ocoupying the chair lor two years. Fifteen years afterwards he was again elected W.M. After the lodge duties, ' a pleasant evening was spent, and, many oldtime reminiscences were recounted.
