SOCIAL AT LOWER HARBOUR.

On Tuesday evening, 16i.1i inst., a, very -successful social was given to Miss Davidson on the occasion of her leaving the district -and approaching marriage, building wasjprettily decorated with ferns and -flowers. Extra sealing was provided, but this proved insufficient, to accommodate ihe large numfcer present. Mr Porter (missionary) occupied tliachair. The event of the evening was a presentation consisting of a silver te»-*nd-coffea - set from members of the church'" choir, and residents oi tile district- Mr Ab'ernethy'nia.ctc^h'ai presentation, referring in his speech' -to 'the* ' good services rendered to the district by Miss Davidson during tbe six years she'^aa , been, among them. As teacher in the school among the ; children, as leader in carrying out picnics and . socials, her help had been invaluable. She'iras foremost in every good cause. Her work in connection with the church'- in training the choir could not be estimated-. The. people of the district and members of the choir' felt that they could not let her leave without giving expression to their" appreciation of her many, kindly services, and asked her to accept this gift as a memento of her stay among them. The Chairman eulogised Miss Davidson's" niany good qualities, pointing, out that the esteem and goodwill of her Lower Harbour friends waa but an earnest of her future success and happiness in life. In a neat speech" JMaster "' Larkius expressed the kindly feelings and good wishes of all the school children for Misß Davidson, saying that they were all sorry she was leaving them. Mi Davidson (teacher) responded on behalf of his sister. He thanked all who liad a hand in the presentations, and' was sure that the gifts would ever be treasured by his sister. An enjoyable programme of music, singing, and recitations was gone through. _ Miss Miller presided at. the organ. Misses A. Davidson, Grieg, Carter, Wix,- Larkins, and Mr 3 Steele contributed aonga; Miss May Larkins and Mr M'Jiean gave recitations; while Messrs Welsted and Brittenden sung, and & choir of school boys' and girls, under Mr Davidson, rendered a school song. Every item was well enjoyed and heartily applauded. Refresh- • ments, provided by ladies of the district, were handed round during the evening. The meet- _, ing closed by all standing, singing a few verses of " God be with you," the " Glory song/ and the doxology.
