1. "Oyster Dredging Off Stewart Island." — A fine sunset effect, where the departing orb of day sinks to rest amid a storm wrack of clouds, which are reflected on each of the tumbling waves in strongly contrasted colours. Amid all this brightness the fishing smacks sail to and fro collecting their precious freight and loading up for the market.
2. " Will She Weather It ? "' — Here we are inti*oduced to a fore-and-aft schooner doing her best to weather a dan-
gerous reef, while on the right the cruel teeth of the rocks just show themselves above the crests of the foam-tossed waves, and seem almost human in their suggestion of danger. This picture was bought by the Auckland Art Society, and row adorns their permanent collection. It is considered a fine and typical example of the artist's manner. 3. " Her Last Voyage " (sequel to the above). — Here we see the unfortunate schooner whose fate no longer trembles in the balance. The hungry sea and the cruel rocks have at last seized her for their prey, and escape is no longer possible. There are no signs of the crew, so let us hope that they have escaped, perhaps by means of the steamer in the offing, from the deck of which they may be watching their beloved barque torn to pieces by the enemy she has so often vanquished.
