picture. The subject is well chosen and well delineated. The grouping of the sheep and lambs is lifelike in the extreme, the tone of soft gvey colour admirably preserved and pleasingly contrasted by the toucli of living gold in the hedge ; the far stretching distant landscape adding harmony and breadth, while the promise and charm, the mystery and hope of spring are all here, speaking to the heart that can understand and appreciate the ever-recurring miracle of life. 4. " Evening, Waitati. "■ — Here the cattle are an incident in characteristic New Zealand landscape. A winding road, a pool of water reflecting the sky, a bit of rough bush full of dead timber ; in the distance a glimpse of the ocean and a jutting headland, and in the centre of the picture four cows slowly wending their way homeward in that leisurely manner which makes a cow the embodiment of rural content. 5. " Ploughing, South Canterbury." — Here all the interest centres in the horses which show the hand of a master and a true love of nature and all the processes of country life. The love that sees and interprets the charm and the boauty of common things.
