THE LORD OF MISRULE.

There was a time in the history of the British Isles when a very wild sovereign ruled at Christmas time, and his name was the Lord of Misrule, and the gifts that he bestowed on his subjects were the gifts that generally follow in the wake of dissipation of all kinds. In Scotland this potentate ruled under another name, and was known as the Abbot of Unreason, and many were the revels and wild were the rejoicings held at their Courts ; but those wild sovereigns have long since passed into oblivion, and have disappered with the Middle Ages, leaving us little but the well-known plum pudding and mince-pies, which they, too, enjoyed, to recall them to our memory. Among the English-speaking people Christmas Day has been the one Church festival that has never fallen into oblivion, but has continued to be revered throughout the land.
