OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
A meeting of the School Commissioners was held on the 16th ; present— Messrs D. Barron (chairman), D. Borrie, T. Mac Gibbon, and W. Dallas. A letter was read from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Invercargill, stating that the fault for non-accsss to section 4, block X, Wyndham, did not lie with the Survey Department, and suggesting that the commissioners gTant a road through their own endowment.—Received. The Chairman reported that the tenders of Messrs Gibb and Munro to erect protective bank at Miss Paterson'a reserve, near Berwick, for £38 10s had been accepted, and that the work is proceeding. — Approved. Messrs Shaw and Telford, owners of land adjacent to section 9, block XVII, Clutha district, wrote asking the commissioners to sign an agreement to waive water rights in connection with the proposed draiuage scheme, and to contribute the sum of £12 towards the expense of carrying out the scheme. — The letter was referred to a, committee consisting of Messrs Dallas and Brow i. Messrs Helder and Audry, lessees of section 31, Takitimo, wrote asking the jcommissioners to accept a surrender of lease. — Received. A report from Mr C. H. Howorth, C.E., was received on the proposed straightening of Hillend Creek, with a recommendation that the work be confined to the endowment, the estimated cost being £450.— Received, a copy to be submitted to Mr Gerard, owner of the adjoining land. tion 14, block XXX, Township of Hampden, had been taken up at the sale of the 27th ult. at the upset, and he recommended that tenders be invited for the lease of -section 17, block XXXII, Dunedin, section 7, block VI, and section 16, block XII, Fairfax, which were parsed in at the sale.— The report was adopted, and it was decided to give effect to the recommendations. A letter was read from J. V. Hacquoil, lessee of section 39, block V, Papakaio, asking that ai area, which he estimates at four acres, which has been taken from the section by encroachment of the sea^ be not includad in his lease. — Left to a- committee for inquiry. Thomas Stroud, lessee of section 22, block VIII, Jacob River, wrote asking, the commis-pinr'-vs to accept 9. surrender of lease.—Declined.. j. v. M' Watson applied, on behalf of R. Coupland, for consent to sub-leaee section 25, block VII, Invercargill Hundred, to John M'Nab.— An application from R. Supples .for 1200 \ 3in tiles to put in section 13, block 11, Aparima ] Hundred wa's granted on the usual conditions. John Bradbury, lessae of section 2, blqck XIV, -Wendon, wrote stating that the Mataura River is cutting into the section; and asking the agent to "inspect it during his next" visit j to the 'district. — It was decided to inspect -the locality when the commissioners were next in the 'district. J. and "W. Anderson, lesses of section 14, block XIV, Wendon, wrote calling attention to the damage done by the encroachment' of the - Mataura Rrvfer. — The commissioners resolved to inspect the section: James Anderson, lessee of section 6, block XIV,. Wendon, wrote calling attention to the expenditure he had been compelled to incur in road-making. — Received. Joseph Cooper, lessee of section 2, block IV, Wendon, wrote to the effect that the roadhne was again nearly washed away by the river encroachment, also stating that there is plenty of suitable stone on his land for erection cf gioins.— Referred to the county engineer for his information, the county to be asked to take steps to protect the road along the river. The Southland agent reported : — (1) That he had attended the sale at Invercargill on the29th November-, and that the highest bid for section 365. Taringatura; was £1 10s per acre, William Keith. Winton ; (2). that section 6, block X, Wyndham, was leased by C. Carnie at 8d per acre; upset 6d. — Noted. The Southland agent forwarded a copy of a notice which he has sent to. alltenants over ."ix months in arrears, and also a copy of final notice to those who have not since paid up, and against whom he intends to take out summonses for last court day this year. — The agent was instiucted to give effect to the original instructions— namely to press for payment. The Southland agent forwarded an application from John Cullen to lease section 7, block XI, Oteramika, at the upset of Is 6d.per acre. — The application was granted on condition the land was clearej and grassed. J. G. Paterson applied for leave to transfer his interest in lease of section 28, block 111, Aparima Hundred, to his co-lessee, J. Todd. — Granted on the usual conditions. A letter wa3 read from Messrs Hall, Stout, and Lillicrap, solicitors, stating that some of the proprietors at Lumsden refusing to join in the" Southland County Council's scheme for abatement of nuisance at Lumsden, the council found ifnecessarv to bring the matter before the court, and had therefore issued a summons against the commissioners in common with others concerned. — It, was decided to authorise the solicitors to use letters previously sent, and that Mr J.
