MISS F HODKINS.
Miss F. Hodgkins is the younger daughter of the late Mr Hodgkins. She received her early art training from her father, who was far more critical and exacting with his own children than with strangers. As a young girl she was often reduced to despair by this severe treatment, and many times declared that she would give up drawing altogether ; but her natural and inherited talent was too strong, and she always returned to the task with renewed energy and perseverance. For some years Miss Hodgkins worked in Dunedin, and made the most of the few opportunities which came in her way. She is now in Europe, dividing her time between the Cornish studio of Mr Garstin, R.A., and various beauty spots on the Continent of Europe. Miss Hodgkins is a conscientious and original worker, and her colouring is wonderfully pure and rich. Her open air work is in the French impressionist style, full of atmosphere and daring contrasts ; but her real bent is towards figure painting, and her portraits show marked talent and intuition. Altogether she is extremely versatile, and it is as yet difficult to predict the special line into which her talent will gravitate. She is ait present in Italy, and hopes to hold an exhibition of her work in London at no distant date.
