1. "Lake Wakatipu." — All who have ever visited the Lakes will immediately lecognise this view. In the distance the towering mass of Mount Earnslaw, crowned by its enormous snowy glacier; on the left, the more distant peaks of the Dart Valley, Cosmos, and others; while in front of these, and somewhat dwarfed by them, we see the bush-covered slopes of Mount Alfred. In the middle distance are Pidgeon and other islands, and the lake itself forms the foreground ; while the heavy, stormy sky serves as an excellent foil for the snow mountains, and admits of fine reflections in the water below. This is a very pleasing picture, and admirably true to nature. 2. " Lake Te Anau." — This is an early morning effect, the bright sky and rising mist being admirably represented. The low foreground, admitting of a wide view of distant wooded peaks, gives an xmusually placid aspect to this wellknown beauty spot.
3. " On the Waitati. " — It would, perhaps, be hard to locate the exact spot presented by this very typical picture, typical of Mr Wilson's special gift in the portrayal of bush and water, and typical also of the pastoral scenes in which our country abounds, and which are often neglected in the search for wilder themes. The picture before us is a summer idyl — the full foliaged trees, the lush grass, the purling stream — all carry us back to some delightful summer holiday ; while the lady and child on the near bank, and the cattle standing on the edge of the stream, give a pleasant touch of life and human interest to the whole.
4. " Lake Te Anau." — Hei'e we have another and wilder glimpse of the great lake, swathed and hidden in mist, from which only a few mountain tops emerge, their snow-touched peaks carrying the eye back in a fine perspective, with an admirable effect of height and size. A rough foreground, full of rocks and bush, and the solitary grandeur of one immense pine, give the necessary completion to this artistic conception.
