CHRISTMAS IN PARIS.

Protestants and Catholics alike keep up Christmas, and in England, probably, more than jn any country, ia the festival most solemnly observed. And what about Paris? How does Paris — that centre of intelligence, taste, and imagination — keep Christmas By eating. Christmas in Paris i 9 a feast of Gargantua; it is the feast of gluttons. People eat black puddings in the restaurants, and the more they eat the happier they are. Nevertheless, the Pantagruelic tradition has not stifled all the touching and poetic aspects of Christmas feasting among our lively neighbours. They like at Christmas-tide holly and mistletoe. But mistletoe and holly are not the only evergreens at the Christmas festival. There is also the pine, with its fine needles, on which are suspended the toys that are the delight of the little ones. Then, in the cold, blue night the bells ring out, calling all good Christians to the triple Mass. In a very short time the churches will be filled with light and music ; and it need not surprise anyone to find hidden behind the pillars, in a meditating way, many who are not in the habit of going thither.
