THE AUSTRALIAN BABY: A HANDBOOK FOR MOTHERS.

By Mrs Eveke-tt Elliss. London and Melbourne : Ward, Lock, and Co. , Just as there is a constant succession -of babies to be brought up and a constant succession of inexperienced young mothers to bring them up, so, no doubt, a constant ftov,- of literature on the subject is not onlynecessary, but also beneficial. This latest .addition to the handbooks of the nursery certainly needs no. ajrologrv for presenting .itself, being amply justified by its own sterling excellence., • The authoress most wisely takes up her -subject with pre.natal influences, and seeks to impress upon her sister women their immense importance .to the unborn babe. The manner is pleasant, .practical, yet full- of innate delicacy, and the matter is varied, comprehensive, and full of excellent common sense. . - In her modest preface Mrs Elliss says: — ."My small book is just a woman's book to women — women in the cities, anxious to set their children sturdy on their feet, but too young or too old-fashioned to know how best to do so — they cannot rush for medical advice on every little point ; women in the bush, cut off from doctors' skill, and left to struggle through burning summers with, perhaps, children whose delicate digestions may be ruined for life by the mother's total lack of knowledge on the subject." Now, it appears to us that the little book cannot fail to do all, and more than, its authoress claims, for it will be of use to jvery mother, and should find a. place in every home where there is, or is going to be, a baby to bring up.
