I ! At Lytt-ellon on the 19th James Haxmstoa ' was fined £100 (subsequently reduced to £25) for attempting to smuggle thrco pictures, of tLe value of 35, from the steamer Tongariro.
Tho Canterbury College Board of Gover* - nors on Monday inquired into the method of giving rclttrious instruction after school ' ; hours at the Boys' and Girls' High Schools, aud cxainine-d Mr Bevan Brown, head' master of the former institution. Dr Frwin (Prosbyi^'frn minister) and Bishop Grimes ('iend of the Roman Catholic, Church here) maintained that instruction had boen one-sided, as it was given only by Church of England clergymen. The board decided that in future its sanction must be obtained for the use of its buildings for religious instruction.
