SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
The monthly mepting of the Otago School Commissioners was held on the 18th ; presentMessrs D. Barron (chairman), A. Balde} 1 , T. Mac Gibbon, AY. Dallas, and D. Borne.
An application was received from the Otago and Southland Investment Company, lessees of section 4, block X, Wyndham, either to have a road provided or tc be allowed to surrender lease. — It was resolved to request the Southland Land Board to Icy off and provide a road as an inlet to the section in lieu of that closed by the board some years ago. A memo, was also received in this connection .from the Southland County Council stating that the closing of the road was carried out by the Lands Departmsnt without reference to the council.
The Southland County Council applied for a subsidy of pound for pound to the extent of £25 for work on the road to Baxter's coalpit, bock VII, Waikaia — Referred to the commissioners to inspect when the district is visited in January next.
Robert Patterson, lessee of section 25, block XI, Oamaiu district, applied for 600 4in and 120 3in pipe? for drainage. — Granted.
Simon Wn<;ht, lessee of section 9, block XVII, Clutha, wrote urging some steps in the direction of drainage on his land. — Mr Dallas was instructed to report on the matter.
A letter was read from the Southland County Council's feolicitora calling upon the commissioners to abats a nuisance o:i section 6, block XIV, and sections 4, 6, S, and 10, block XV, Lumsdeu, within 28 dars. — The letter was referred to the Southland agent to dtal with the matter.

James M'Leau, sen., lessee of Greenvale run, wrote requesting the commissioners to reconsider their decision not to grant him a rebate of rent on accoi.nt of lo&s of stock through the exceptionally bad weather recently experienced. — It was decided to inform the applicant that the commissioners had no power to make any rebate.
It was also resolved to send a similar reply; to R. M'Kenzie, who applied for a reduction in rent of Run 166 a, Takiiimo.
A similar application from Messrs Helder and Awdry in regard to section 31, Takitimo, was declined.
The Southland agent wrote suggesting that lot 60, being an area of 21a lr 38p, which the commissioners were purchasing from the New Zealand Agricultural Company, should be offered to Mr Varcoe, lessee of section 220, 'Hokonui. — The commissioners resolved to Ox the rent at 2s 6d per acre per annum, Mr Varcoe to be allowed to shift the dividing fence to the roadline and have valuation for at.
James Beattie wrote drawing attention to the hardship of being rated on< +he unimproved value of section 61, block XVI, Gore. — The Southland agent also wrote ra this matter, suggesting that the lease might be surrendered and the section divided into building allotments of half an acre each. — Received. An application from J. K. Kidd, section 1, block IV, Toi Tois, for 100 4in drain tiles was granted. An application from Messrs Power and Crean, section 20, Wairio district, to be allowed to surrender their lease with the .improvements thereon was declined.
The Southland agent forwarded a list of leases exphing on April 30, 1903, and suggested that they should be reofiered early next year.— Approved.
Regarding section 15, block XIII, Mataroa township, it was decided to again request the Railway Department to pay for portion of this section taken for Tailway purposes.
A report was recsived from Messrs Baldey and Mac Gibbon on the petition from P. M'Gee and others for the straightening and widening of Hillend Creek thrcugh their holdings at Tarangitura and -Oreti Hundred. The report recommended that the engineer should be instructed to prepare plans and levels showing the cost of the best line of deviation. — The commissioners adopted the recommendation.
Accounts amounting tG £27 7s 9d were passed for payment.
