The Clutha and Matau Agricultural and Pastoral Society enjoyed anything but good! weather on Friday for their sixteenth annual show. Rain began to fall about noon, and continued without cessation until ♦ o'clock, and in the face of such adverse circumstances the society may congratulate themselves on the fact that the attendance waa' something over 1500 persons. The Balclutha Brass Band was present, and played during the afternoon.
The entries totalled 418, the principal classes being — Horses, HO; Bheep, 81; dairy iproduce, 70 ; cattle, 38 ; and agricultural implements, 35. Last year the exhibits num.* bered 360. The draught horses were a very fine lot, quite equal to anything that- has been put forward for the last few years; The Clydesdale stallions were conspicuous objects, their massive and shapely build eliciting warm admiration from competent judges. There was keen competition in the class for- yearling colts or geldings, frh« honour of first .place going to Mr David Murray, of Warepa. The brood mares and ■fillies were in first-class condition, and among the thoroughbreds and the light harness horses were many exceedingly good, serviceable animals, whose merits occupied the attention of the judges for a considerable time before a decision was arrived at. Taking it all round, the show of horses wag one that it would have been hard to beat, for the Clutha horses have many desirable points to commend them. Cattle were represented by shorthorns and crossbreds, which aro more suitable for the nature of the district than Ayrshires, the class for which was a blank. Sheep were not very well represented. Merinos and Leicesters formed the bulk of the exhibit, and in merinos Mr John Johnston swept everything before him, while in the other divisions Mr David Murray enjoyed a similar success. There was only one class of Romney Marsh, and no Downs or Lincolns were entered. The crossbred section produced close competition, the majority of the points being secured by Mr W. Farquharson, 01 Lovell's Flat. Seventy exhibits of dairy produce of different kinds were sent va, the honours, as usual, being keenly competed for. Agricultural and dairy unple r mentß were shown by the Loan and Mercantile Company, Massey-Harris Company, Herman House and" Company, Limited! (Oamaru), Morrow, Bassett, and Co , Reid and Gray J. E. Wilson (Gore)., Nimmo and Blair, Osborne-Columbia Company (Dalgety and Co.), and A. R. Ayson (Invercargill). The arrangements for the show, were in the hands of a capable committee, and Mr T. M'Donald made an efficient and 1 obliging secretary. The following is th« prize list : — CATTLE SHOBT3ORN. Judge: Mr James fVow (Moßgiel). BulL any ace. Three entries— David Mob
