(a) The old variations of the Allgaier are generally considered unsound; it is agreed, too, that the text move by Thorold is not good, but there is no doubt that it give 9 a powerful attack, the defence to which is very difficult. (b) The usual move is P-Q 4, but the attack in that case is equally strong. (c) The books, as a rule, give K-K 1 here. (d) The object of the move 19 to avoid a check by Q-Q 5, which iv certain possible varia<tions would be most dangerous for White. <c) Threatening 17 R x Xt eh, P x R; 18 Q x P eh, etc. 1 (f) Black's best move is K-B 1. White would then be unable to sacrifice the rook with advantage. (o) This places the queen in a dangerous position; again, K-B 1 ought to have been played. "White has a won game from thia point. toi If 19, K-B 1; 20 Kt-E. C«t RKJLjoat
just the same. For instance, 20 B-R 6 eh; 21 K-Kt 1, Xt x Xt; 22 R x Xt, Q-B 4; 23 Q-R 3 eh, K-K 1; 24 B x Xt eh, K-Q 1; 25 B-K 3. (r) The position, is very interesting. Black has nothing better, as the principal variations show:—lf 20 Xt x Xt; 21 Qx Xt eh, B-B 4; 22 R x B, Q x R; 23 B-B 7 oh, winning the Queen. If 20 Xt xQ P; 21 Xt x Q, Xt xQ; 22 B-B 7 eh, X x Xt; 23 R x Xt dis, eh, etc. If 20 B-R 6 eh; 21 K-Kt 1, B-Kt 5; 22 Xt x Q, Bx Q; 23 B-B 7 eh, X x Xt; 24 R x B dis eh, K-Kt 5; 25 K-Kt 2, winning. (j) White has only to choose the method of winning. P x Xt or Q-Kt 3 are just as good. The text move was adopted for sake of the pretty variation 22 X x Kt. (k) If 22 K-R 3; 23 Xt x Xt, B x P; 24 R x B, double eh, etc. The following is the game by which the late 11. Rosenthal gained the brilliancy piize in the London tournament of 18S3.
