OPENING OF A NEW THEATRF.
An important announcement is made thje morning regarding the opening of Dunedin's pew placs3 of amusement — namely, His Majesty's Theatre. This elegant theatre, which, it is asserted, will be one of the most luxurious, comfortable, and perfectly appointed theatres in New Zealand, is now rapidly approaching completion, and will be Opened on Wednesday, 3rd December, when the well-known Australian entrepreneur, Mr J. C. Williamson, will stage for the fiist time in Dunedin the much-talkrd-of musical novelty "A Runaway Girl." This musical play was first produced at Mr George Edwardes's London theatre, the Gaiety, in 1899, and scored such a success that it ran there fov 24 consecutive months. Since then it has been transported to the Continent and America, where many companies have been playing it with exceptionally successful results. Its Australian record has also been very brilliant, as it was presented at Her Majesty's Theatre, Melbourne, for 12 consecutive weeks to packed hou£e3, the management stating that arrangements which had been previously entered into alone compelled them to reluctantly withdraw it in the height of its popularity. In Sydney, too, at the Theatre Royal, it had a splendid run of eight weeks, and Adela'de followed suit with a two weeks' sea=on — a remarkably long run for any one piece in that city. Since the inauguration of the New Zetland tour in Wellington on November 7 the season has been the most brilliant ever known in that city, far exceeding in financial Tesults those of the attractions sent over here by Mr Williamson for many a long day. Apart from the production itself, the event will be of great interest, inasmuch as it will mark the first appearance here of Mr J. C. Williamson's Musical Comedy Company, consisting of upwards of 100 English and Australian operatic artists, with a complete opera chorus, orchestra, and ballet. The names of the principal artists are published elsewhere. Mr Fred H. Graham and Mr C. R. Bantock, comedians (fiom the Gaiety Theatre, London), will make their first appearance in this city, Mr Maurice Dudley and Miss Lilian Digges (from the leading London theatres) will also make their bow to Dunedin audiences. Other members of the cast are: Miss Rose Musgrove, the talented young Australian soubrette • Misses Blanche Wallace. Elsie Moore, Aggie Kelton, Mess is George Lydingr. Fred Leslie, Arthur Crane, and others.' Full particulars regarding the opening of the box plan, prices, etc , will be du'y announced.
