The first of this season's wool clip has reached the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company's stores from the Clyde\ale f-tation.
The total length of the new Pacific oahle is 3445 miles, being 55 miles less than was anticipated.
The American Navy Department, which has been experimenting for «om» time with oil fuel for warships, has issued a report which shows that oil is more expensive, than coal in the proportion of If to 10, and that it is more dangerous to handle. Steam can be generated, however, more quickly with oil fuel than with coal. The report is variously interpreted as favouring and as opposing oil fuel.
The Paparoa. from Wellington 'October 4) arrived at Plymouth on Wednesday.
The s.s. Moeraki was thrown open for public inspection on Saturday night at a small charge in aid of the Ehnccamite fund. As the evening was fine a large number availed themselves of the opportunity to look over t>e latest addition to the Union Company's fleet. The ship, lit up throughout, was a brilliant spectacle, and it is understood a sum in excess of what -was anticipated will be handed over to the fund for the survivors of the Elingamite.
An excellent passage from London lias been made by the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Waimate, which arrived off Otago Heads and anchored at 20 minutes after midnight on Friday. The Waimate is still under the command of Captain J. J. Hamon, and brings 12 paseengers, with 3500 tons of cargo, of which 3000 tons ere for Dunedin and the remaining 500 for Lyttelteß.
