RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.
WELLINGTON RACES. First Day— Friday, November 21. The Wellington Racing Cub was favoured with fine weather and a good attendance for the first day of the spring meeting. Contrary to past experience of the Hutt course the favourites in seven out of the eight events on the programme prevailed. Cruciform's win in the Wellington Handicap was made the occasion of a popular demonstration, Mr Stead's representative being enthusiastically cheered on returning to scale. A large number of bookmakers did business in the paddock and on the lawn. Speculation per the medium of the totalisator was cot as brisk as usual, and only £7157 was put, through the machines as compared with £10,050 on the first day of last year's spring meeting.
